I was asked at bag check today if the center column of my tripod can be extended as if this is something that's not allowed. I've never been asked this. Is this a new policy? My tripod was inside my backpack.

It's certainly never been part of the description of what's allowed and what isn't.

Is there a chance they thought it was a selfie stick?

I mentioned it's not a selfie stick and showed it to him. I convinced him to let me through by saying it only extends a few inches.

Just a wild guess... wonder if they are concerned that it could be removed and used as a baton, or used to conceal something. Or sometime security asks odd questions to see what kind of reaction they get.

Yes. To clarify: the center column extends a few inches. His main concern was the center column, not the legs, which doesn't make sense to me.
Security might be checking for “tripods” that are primarily selfie-sticks:

OP, I'd love to see a photo of your folded up tripod.

Curious but why do you need a tripod at Disney? Better park and environment pictures?
I bring my tripod for fireworks and night photos.

Interesting. My tripod is too big to be used as a selfie stick.

I don't have my tripod with me right now; in line at D23. It's an off brand but it is very similar to the MeFoto Roadtrip and folds up just like that one.

How much weight can it support? I have yet to find a fold up that can support more than 5 lbs.

I thought about bringing my selfie stick but had no intention of using it in it's extended form. I just want to have a handle to hold onto with the shutter release built into the handle, vs. holding the phone with my thumb and index finger as is the custom when attempting a selfie. But I suppose I would have no way of proving/convincing security that I was indeed only going to use it in its retracted/compact form. In the end I forgot to pack it for the trip anyway....

Kind of unrelated but do you guys think they will let me take my tripod in? it's a Sunpak 6000PG. Wdw states the tripod needs to be able to fit inside a standard backpack. My backpack is a bit smaller than normal ones and my tripod doesn't fit in, but it can fit on the outside and only sticks up about 3 inches taller than the backpack. Do you think they will allow this?

My husband sometimes brings his camera gear into the parks, including a fold up tripod, and we've gotten mixed results at bag check. Twice they've made him take it back to our hotel room because it looked too much like a selfie stick to them (which my husband didn't even realize aren't allowed). But several other times they thought nothing of it.

By the way, when did the selfie stick ban happen? I remember being in the parks just a couple of years ago and I felt like they were everywhere, tons of people stopping on Main St. to use them with large groups. On our last trip I didn't notice them, but figured it's because they aren't really a popular fad anymore.

I think the ban started in 2015. Strange thing is, I have seen people in the parks with selfie sticks, even within the past few months.

I can see why people hate them (the sticks that is), because a lot of people aren't just taking them out to snap a photos and then putting it back, they're leaving their phone/camera on them and walking around with the stick extended, waving it carelessly and you guessed it, wacking the people around them. However, used responsibly I've found it very helpful. Once I was in the snow and I shoved it in the snow to make an instant tripod.

If it extends, they won't let it in.
