Can you help this newbie figure out a gift card triple-dip strategy for an upcoming trip? Amount in question is $2000. Here's what I'm thinking:

1. Use Visa rewards card (1% cash back) to purchase $2000 in Target gift cards. Have just earned $20.
2. Get a Target Red Card (debit)
3. Once receive Red Card and Target gift cards, and once verify there are no glitches with activation (how?), go to Target.com and use Target gift cards to purchase $2000 in Disney gift cards. May need to divide these among several purchases due to daily limits. Select Red Card as default payment in order to get 5% off, but really pay with the Target gift cards. Have just earned another $100.
4. Set up a Disney Vacation Account. Laboriously enter all the Disney gift cards into the account, observing daily limits. Make sure account is established at least 120 days before trip. Pre-pay for trip from account at least six weeks in advance. Request bonus gift cards ($40) be sent.

This strategy yields $160 total. Am I missing something? Wanted to get the Target gift cards at a discount from raise.com (for a quadruple dip!), but the site stated that gift cards (Target in this case) cannot be used to purchase other gift cards (Disney in this case). Is there some other way to get Target gift cards at a discount and to be assured that they can be used to purchase Disney gift cards?

Thank you VERY much for your guidance.

You CAN purchase target gift cards from someplace like raise and use the cards to buy disney gift cards.

Yes, MatzoBelle, you absolutely can purchase Target gc on Raise and then use those to buy Disney gc - awesome deal! I learned that here on the Dis and have been making regular purchases of these.

You really haven't "earned" another $100. You have "saved" $100. It is still in the form of a Target GC because you will have spent $1900 in Target GCs to purchase $2000 of Disney GCs from Target .com. You could use that $100 left in Target GCs to buy 2 more $50 Disney GCs and it will take $95 off the Target GCs, leaving you with $5 unspent on a Target GC.

Sign up for topcashback and go through that site to buy 1,000 in target gift certificates from Raise(topcashback has a 1,000 limit on cash back) get $10 cashback.
Then go through topcashback to buy another 1,000 in target gift cards through Cardpool(topcashback has a 1,000 limit on cash back) and get 2% cash back, so $20 cash back there.

Total of $30 more cash back!

I thought of that, but since I can use that $100 (that I didn't pay a penny for) to purchase tangible goods, it feels like earnings rather than savings.

Thanks to all of you for your additional tips and support! Just great.

Can the 7+% discounts on Target gift cards on raise.com be trusted? That's HUGE.

I just bought my first one ($100 for $92.50) and it worked for my Target Disney GC purchase. I figured I would keep my cash in the savings account a bit longer before buying the higher-dollar amounts.

But you DID pay for it! What you did was get $2100 worth of goods (GCs and other Target purchases) for a total of $2000 OOP. Don't get sucked into the "I didn't pay a penny for it" mentality.

Yes. They can be trusted. Their customer service has been awesome whenever I've had a problem. They guarantee that the GC you purchase will have at least the amount that they say it will have. In fact, they will guarantee that amount for 60 days following your puchase, just in case the seller held onto the information and then used the GC after they sold it. (I've had that happen more than once.)

We just look at the same situation differently.
I guess that we do! Your purchase was either a discount on your Disney GCs OR $100 in *free* Target money, but it's not both. But there's no ignoring the fact that you will have spent $2K in order to get $2100 in Disney GCs and Target merchandise. That's a mathematical fact and it's not subject to perspective.

Hi Matzobelle (matzoball?)
Can you advice on the triple-dip strategy as planning a similar trip to yourself I think looking at the thread here? Scared of all things Disney and all things Target. I'm from the British Isles so need sane advice. Cheers

This is a very interesting way of saving money but it seems like a lot of work. Would booking through Orbitz at 10-20% off not save you just as much if not more money?

Can you get free dining through Orbitz??? I do the Target gift card thing on top of free dining and save a huge amount!

Yes, it's a little work. Say it takes me an hour or two to do the whole process, beginning to end. If I save $250, I'd say it's worth it!
