Thurs. 8/14: Day before leaving. Things to do: Pack for 5. Go to bank. Write out bill payments. Appointment to get legs and underarms waxed (Ouch!!!). Shop for groceries for trip and home (husband and oldest daughter staying home). Fill truck up with gas.
I get to the bank about 8:45 and it doesn't open until 9:00. No problem though, my appointment is at 9:30. Bank opens, I have a couple of transactions to take care of. I get the slowest teller. at 9:20 I decide I'll come back later to hit the ATM machine for my cash for the trip because I need to get to my waxing appointment.
I am tooling along through the day, my two older ones are dropped off at their work places, and I am thinking how organized I am.
I stop home to drop my load from Costco and decide to start packing. My husband asks if I filled the tank and got money. No no, I have time I'll do that later. Well you were at the bank, why didn't you get money then? I tell him about slow teller and my pressing waxing appointment. He shakes his head, the money and gas would be first on his list.
Hey what is with the power? I get a call from my friend who is a couple of towns away at work asking if the power is out. Uh oh, now we are hearing about the big multi-state blackout. Out the door I go hoping that I can get gas, money and ice. No luck.
My older kids call to be picked up from work. The calls start coming. You're not going to leave tomorrow are you!!!???!!! Yes I am still planning on leaving power or no power. I ask my kids how much cash they have and proceed to borrow it from them. Between what they give me and my credit card I am all set. Only problem is gas, but I do have half a tank.
Packing in the dark is no fun. I get very little sleep (I don't sleep well to begin with) because 3 of my kids keep waking me up. The good news is our power came back on at 12:30! I head out around 6:00 in the morning and stop for gas and something to eat. We hit the highway around 6:45. We're off!!!!!!
