Betty Boop: DW who loves Disney, but is a huge Boop fan and left me for broke at the Betty Boop store at IOA....
SpideyHulk24jr: 3 year old DS who loves Mickey, Spiderman, Hulk and his daddy for taking him on this wonderful vacation!
PRE-TRIP: (Here's how it all started)
We took our main family vacation in March of this year. We took the 7 day western carribbean cruise on the Disney Magic. We loved it, but here we are 4 months later, feeling the stress of work, daily life and ready to vacation again. My wife called me and told me that there was specific dates where she could vacation. Her job is really busy and all the other managers were out for the rest of the time. I put my time in as well and now the challenge was to find out where to go. We live in Florida (30 minutes away from Universal-- 15 if you use toll roads). We wanted to vacation in Florida, but not break the bank. We looked around and were going to do a beach vacation with Bush Gardens attached, however in conversation my wife told me that we hadn't been to Universal since IOA opened and she really wanted to go back. That is where this great board comes in. I started researching ticket prices and found all this information here. When I told my wife about this she really wanted me to research the whole thing out. When we found out what a great destination Universal has become and about FOTL my wife exclaimed book it!!!! So I contacted Universal and inquired about the entertainment rate, the Fan Club rate and so on. All rates were available but only 07/23-07/25 and we needed to stay until 07/26. So once again, through this great board I heard of hotel kingdom. I checked with them and they had all of my nights available so I booked it. We paid $140 a night. (Yes, more than all the other discounts, but we wanted this resort over those dates and now I know it was worth it.)
After booking our room, I booked the 5 day ticket on line for pick up at the park. We were now ready. I could not believe it. Since I booked this trip about 1 and 1/2 months out, the planning was all part of it. I researched restaurants, IOA touring plans,...you name it, I researched it. I was now a PRO (or at least I thought I was) when it came to Universal Orlando.
DAY 1: 07/23/03:
We woke up around 8 a.m. had a leisurely breakfast at home, got dressed and headed out. We arrived at the RPR around 10:30 a.m. We drove up and we were so excited. The resort looked so beautiful from the outside. We got to the gate and told the attendant we were checking in. He replied "Welcome to the Islands" and told us to go up the drive way to the front of the resort to check our bags in. We knew we were going to have a wonderful vacation at this point. As we drove up a bellman opened my door and said welcome and advised us that rooms were not ready yet, but we could check in and they would hold our bags so we could go to the parks, pool, etc.
After tipping the bellman and doing the self parking thing we walked into the resort and were greeted with the breathtaking fountain. (I have to say that I know this resort is the moderate or lower end of the 3 on site hotels, but it is not bottom of the line-it truly is a deluxe resort. We proceeded to the Loews member check in (heard about it and signed up from this board) and was greeted by Pia. Pia was one of the best CM's I ever met. As soon as she saw my son she said "I have a gift for you and gave him the sand pail, with the magnets and the shell necklace I had heard about. After asking some questions, I inquired about an upgrade and she offered me the executive suite for $35 extra a night. I asked about club level and she advised that it was not available throughout our whole stay so we decided not to do it. Pia answered all our questions, met all of our requests and was so friendly. She truly is the epitomy of guest service. She gave us our checkin packet, advised that our milk and cookies (our choice) would arrive that evening, and gave us a phone number to call to see when the room was ready, but it was not guaranteed until 4 p.m.
My wife, son and I decided to tour the resort, and head out via the water taxi to City Walk. We arrived at City Walk around 12 p.m. and headed to Nascar Cafe. My son loves race cars and thought this would be a nice place to take him. We took some pictures with all of the cars. When we were seated, we ordered quickly and waited for our food. We started off with a queso dip with chips, I had a pulled bbq sandwich with fries, DW had a bacon cheeseburger with fries, and DS had chicken tenders with fries. The portions were huge and two people could split a dish if they wanted to. Our server was friendly, but would leave and not check on us for long periods of time. However, it was a good experience. Our total bill with the tip was $40.80.

After lunch we walked around City Walk and did some shopping. I bought my wife a watch at Fossil, we hit the Universal Studios Store and bought the usual souvenirs, and then since we were right by IOA we picked up our tickets at the will call machine. At this point we were melting (It was about 95 degrees outside so we walked back to the resort (6 minute walk) and wanted to go swimming. We packed a book bag with our suits for this since our luggage was checked in. When we got to the resort, I told my wife it probably won't be ready because it's only 2, but I want to check the status on our room. So I called the number, gave our account number and our room was ready. We decided to go to the room first and then go swimming. Our room was 1623, (Tower 1 floor six room 23) When we walked in, we were awe struck. The room had the bathroom and sink on the right and it was separated by a burgundy colored wall which had a wood carving of flowers on it. (It's hard to explain, but it's beautiful and the light shines through it from the room) We had a king bed and a queen pull out sofa. Our room faced IOA so we could see and hear the Hulk. We loved it!!! We could also see the Island Blast fireworks from our room!!!!!
The bellman arrived with our luggage gave him a $5 tip for 3 bags and we were off to the pool. We swam for about 1 hour and then headed to the room to go to dinner. We decided to go to Motown Cafe. We walked in and loved the atmosphere. There were statues of the supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Jackson five and the music was great. (Before my time, but great!!!) Our server came over and introduced her self. We ordered: DW- a Pina Colada, Sirloin steak with mased potatoes and vegetables; DS had a hotdog and fries and I had Diet Coke, Chicken and Ribs with fries and coleslaw. For dessert we all shared a hot fudge brownie sundae. The food was good, but my fries were cold. Total bill with tip was $58.82

We rode Spiderman, Stormforce Acceletron, The Cat in the Hat (4 times in 20 minutes) One Fish, Two Fish and the Caroseussel. We did all this in 1 hour!!!!! It was great. After this we were beat, so we headed to our room to call it a night. We walked in and our milk and cookies were there waiting. They were delicious and huge!!!! We rented an in room movie: Boat Trip with Cuba Gooding Jr. Really funny, but it cost $11.99. Oh well, we are on vacation!!! That was it and we called it a night!
DAY 2: 07/24/03:
We woke up at 7:45. Spiderman gave us a wake up call. Very cool. My son loved it!!!! We got dressed and had quick bite at the Orchid Lounge. They serve a continental breakfast. I had: coffee, bagel with cream cheese and a chocolate chip muffin, DW had coffee, bagel with cream cheese, DS had: apple juice, a banana and those great cinnamon buns with frosting!!! Total bill :$19.19
We were now off to Universal Studios for the day. We got there at park opening, via the water taxi and walked in to find the Rug rats and Jimmy Neutron in front of the Universal Studios Store. We did picture and autographs and headed out to Shrek 4-D. With FOTL we waited 5 minutes and did this awesome attraction!!! Do not miss this. My DS was a little nervous but loved it and wanted to do it over and over again!!!! We then headed to Jimmy Neutron and the wait time posted was 45 minutes. With FOTL we rode it 3 times in 20 minutes. Also a great attraction. After this we did Twister the Ghostbusters Show, Beetle Juice and now it was time for lunch. We had lunch at Louie's Italian Restaurant. This counter service place is wonderful. I had: The pizza/caser combo- it included 1 slice and a small caesar salad, diet coke. DW had a caesar salad with bread sticks, diet coke and ds had a slice of pizza. Total bill was $22.00. After lunch I rode MIB and DW and DS shopped. My DS was too short for the attraction and DW wasn't interested. After this we rode Back to the Future, ET and watched the Barney show. We did all this with FOTL and in about 1 hour with walk times, stopping along the way for pictures, autographs, etc. After Barney we saw the new Toon show. It was great. They come out on stage sing, dance and then come out for a meet and great. Our show had Courious George, Woody Woodpecker and his girlfriend, Shaggy and Scooby. After this show, DS wanted to ride the Nutcoaster and we did it 5 times in 20 minutes with FOTL. We then headed to Curious George play area where he got soaked. PARENTS: take extra clothes for your kids. We did and were glad. You will get soaked here. It was now about 5 p.m and we were hungry. We were tired so we left the park (not without riding Jimmy Neutron two more times and taking pics and autographs with Sponge Bob) and headed to the Hard Rock. We showed our room key and literally walked in, while non resort guests waited for tables. Our server was great. Very attentive and made great conversation. We started with the spinach and chicken dip with chips, DW and I each had: the marinated chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and veggies and DS had: guitar shaped chix tenders and fries. For dessert we shared huge brownie sundae (we love brownies). DW had a pina colada, I had diet coke and ds had milk. Total bill with tip: $50.42

By the fourth time, the regular line was 60 minutes, but FOTL could be done in 10. After Spiderman, we did some shopping in the Spiderman shop and had our bags delivered to the hotel. We met with the Marvel Superheros (Spiderman, Wolverine, Storm Captain America and Hulk) We then rode the Storm Acceletron 3 times in 10 minutes. From here , we headed to Toon Lagoon. In closing, this vacation was wonderful, we are definitely going back and we already looking at the Hard Rock for next year. The RPR was a top of the line resort, the CM's were there to please and the parks were great. FOTL is so worth it!!!!!!!! You get to do what you want at your pace. You will get some looks, but don't worry. The way I see it is everyone has the same option and if you choose not to use FOTL, than that is your issue. The parks are really busy right now and weekends are alot busier. We waited 10 minutes for Shrek today, but then it increased to about 25 with FOTL (but the park was packed today, this is not the norm with FOTL) All other attractions were either a walk on or 5 minutes. If you have any questions let me know. I will try and answer them as soon as possible.
