Whew! What a week at the Fort. Weather was pretty good and the Fort was pretty full. This was the first time in a long time I'd been during this time of year and I can appreciate why this is a "Peak" season.

Arrived Saturday at 2 p.m. EVERY check-in lane was open and had at least 3-4 campers in line. Never seen that before! It's okay, no rush. Took 30 minutes to get up to the front :hourglass . I had requested loop 900 but they couldn't work it but I got loop 1000 (site 1003) right behind the 900-1000 bathhouse just off the main road across from the Meadow Trading Post. :thumbsup2 Funny thing was, when I left that afternoon about 4:30 to go get some grub at Winn Dixie, only 2 lanes had single campers in it. I guess everyone like me wanted to get there on or soon after the official 1 p.m. check-in time. So I learned :teacher: that unless you got something planned on your first night, late afternoon is the way to go.

Did the C&D campfire on Saturday and Sunday nights. Miss Julie did both of these (and I heard her doing other nights during the week too I think). Just remember, people, it's a SING-a-long and not a LISTEN-a-long :rolleyes1 .

Weather was great for camping outdoors. We had a few cool nights early (down to 40) but by the end of the week the low was 60. A few sprinkles of rain Tuesday at the Studios and Thursday at the Fort but it didn't last long. Only Thursday afternoon's shower was heavy but very brief. I was in the pool so it didn't bother me! As I was sitting in a rocking chair at the Meadow TP Thursday morning a CM came by picking up trash. We talked and he said this is the one month they live for weather-wise...

I dragged DW, 2 DS, and DD to two spring training baseball games, one at Winter Haven (Cleveland Indians, my childhood team) and one at Disney Sports (Atlanta Braves). I laughed because at both games lots of people, almost on cue, left after the 6th inning (to beat the traffic? ). Thanks to them leaving early en masse, there was no traffic when I left at game's end!

We went to the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday. The Visitor's Center is nearly worth skipping. The IMAX movie was good, other than that the Bus Tour is the key draw. We did the UP CLOSE tour and the family greatly enjoyed it. It's an hour from the Fort and 3 toll booths early on (2 between the Fort and the airport, then one just past where the 417/528 come together, then about 30 miles of clear sailing. I guess that's how the locals get us tourists to pay for their roads (their perogative - I'd do the same) .

Took the family to eat lunch at Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney Thursday. The kids greatly enjoyed it and I had the Pastalaya which was fabulous! We had checked there the previous night coming back from KSC and it was a 2.5 hr wait :rotfl2: . No place is worth that. So we went back the next day and just walked in for lunch no wait, no problem. Also ate breakfast at Trail's End on check-out day. Food was good, service was prompt. Nice selection of "healthy" foods (fruit, cereals, etc), breads/muffins (4-5 varieties), and plenty of scrambled eggs, omlets (scrambled with cheese, mushrooms), sausage, bacon, corned beef/hash, biscuits/gravy, and Mickey waffles. It was good and the place was full by the time we left.

We GREATLY enjoyed our down time at the Fort. In fact, we dropped Typhoon Lagoon off our itinerary to have a down day at the Fort just to hang out (Thursday). Only went "off campus" to eat lunch at Rainforest. Plus the two ball game days (both games were at 1 p.m.) left us several hours in the morning and the afternoon at the Fort so we rode bikes a lot, swam, even did a family canoe round trip around the canals (getting DW into a canoe was a major accomplishment :goodvibes ). We saw a little gator, lots of birds, and it was very peaceful. I even snuck my 14-year old away from his brother and sister and he drove me around Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon in a Searaycer boat (10% off that with AAA). The CM was nice and gave us 40 minutes for the price of 30. My son felt all grown up driving the boat! :cool2:

I met one of our posters here on DISBoards, Stacktester. Boy, when he says his trailer is red, he's not kidding! I thought maybe a red strip or half red/white but it is ALL red so it was easy to find him (plus he was in loop 900). It was nice to meet him and I know others of you were there! We need to get more organized :woohoo: .

My only negative (soapbox time) is that the golf cart situation is almost out of control. I realize some folks need them for mobility purposes (bad knees, old age, etc) but most folks I saw needed to be walking more and riding less. But since they are willing to pay $$$$ then the Mouse will accomodate them. In fact, down at the bus loop/drop-off at Pioneer hall there was a small strip of golf cart parking but just before it was some of the last remains of the FW Railroad, some wooden ties still in the ground. They're now gone as they appear to be extending the golf cart parking area (more blacktop). Couple that with all the carts people bring with them and it's getting crowded. We went down to the beach on our last night to watch the fireworks over the MK and the light parade and the cart parking down there by the Marina was so crowded it was laughable.

So the Fort was nearly full the whole week and we had fun. Time to regroup and plan the next trip - a short one (4 nights) just before Christmas. Get in before the big crowds show up to see the decorations, do MK, and try our hand at decorating our campsite :santa: .

Welcome home! Glad to see you had a good time. We go back again June 26-July 1 and the whole trip will be down time at the Fort except for one day at Blizzard Beach.

I'm curious..a 14 year old and yourself in a Sea Racer?...How did that work out. My son is going to be 16 and is 6'2"...and he isn't able to rent because now(May trip) apparently you need to be a licensed driver to operate them on Bay Lake. Last visit he was 12 and met the height requirement..and he rented then. A bit disspointing that now he is actually older and won't be able to. Unless they've changed considerably I couldn't imagine two adult sized people in them..they weren't that fast to begin with. I would imagine they didn't move to quickly with two people. We are considering taking him over to the Beach Club..the marina there..so that he can rent one on his own. My older son (26)and daughter(20) are coming also..and they were looking forward to doing this again..but it's hard if the younger one can't..they aren't going to do it without him.

Well, I think the age limit is 12 for the Searaycer. I clearly told the CM at the marina that my son standing there would be the driver (they gave him a little red wristband). No, with the 2 of us it wasn't fast but since he can't drive yet I don't think he minded. He was behind the wheel! Too, my 14yo is thin as a rail (I'm not). I rented a pontoon boat last year at FW and for that I had to be older than 12. Maybe it's if he's taking the boat out by himself versus going with an adult.

It was nice meeting you too Ed. Sorry we couldn't have done the movie together. Mt dd had a good time playing with your daughter for the short time they did play. I totally agree with Ed about the golf carts. I thought of getting my own but I think I need the excercise worse than I need a cart. My DD and I have a good time just riding bikes and hanging out at the fort. We did very little time in the parks this time and did more relaxing time at the fort. Oh and as far as the golf carts, I saw a lot of kids driving them and it was dangerous a few times getting around them. I wish FW would enforce the rules on that as well as kids wearing helmets. I saw so many kids without helmets on bikes.

As I was sitting in a rocking chair at the Meadow TP Thursday morning a CM came by picking up trash. We talked and he said this is the one month they live for weather-wise...

Yea, this month is about as perfect as it gets for us South Florida/Central Florida locals. Not too hot, not cold, good breeze, cool nights. Only problem is this is the "dry" season for us, and this is when most Florida lawns die (as compared to winter for everyone else...lol). We haven't had rain at my house in a month and a half, and water restrictions just went into place for most of South Florida and the Treasure Coast of Florida.

That will all change in about a month when it won't do anything but rain every afternoon, at which point every trip report will change from how great the weather was to "well, on our 3rd afternoon of dipping inside to miss the one hour thunderstorm" ;)

As for the golf carts, some of us just love them, it's part of our history at Fort Wilderness! We can't even imagine not having one when we are there, and we always decorate ours at Thanksgiving/Christmas time.

Oh, and kids have been driving golf carts since I was a kid. Not saying it's right, but well, it's nothing new ;)

P.S. Great trip report, really enjoyed reading it. We don't get tons of Fort Wilderness trip reports, and whenever they go into some nice detail as you did, it's thoroughly enjoyable. This is two in one week, come on people, let's get some more! lol

I am crossing my fingers that the rain holds off until after we leave ;) We will be there April 7th-13th. We are experiencing record temps here in Michigan this week. 77 today !! The grass is already green and we have tulips starting to come up :)

We have a golf cart at home that my 10 and almost 13 year olds drive it very well. But I won't be letting them drive at the fort..or any other public place !!

I LOVE the trip reports too..almost as much as the pictures !! I do plan on posting my trip reports and photos...probably smaller daily ones rather than one big long one that would turn into a book :thumbsup2

9 more days until we hit the road !!

We are down to 3 days until we leave for FW..! I've been walking around with this stupid grin for about a month, and I cannot believe that it's this close. You guys/gals in Florida should be thankful that yall live so close. It'll be a nice 2000 mile round tripper for us..! DW and I are doing our very best to see that we can make it every year. We will definitely submit a very lengthy/detailed trip report..! :thumbsup2

I agree totally on the golf cart situation.....

I think I'll give them a call. I think because you were in the same boat it wasn't an issue. My son is 15...going to be 16 in June. He is about as skinny as skinny can be..6'2"...and all of 126 lbs! However..there is NO WAY he's gonna be seen at this point riding with mom and dad in one of the Sea Raycers. I'm sure he'd fit in with one of us..but it would look kind of ridiculous I guess. When we last visited the WL four years ago he was 12 and able to rent his own..of course we all rented and were out together in individual boats. They offered a family plan that included the bike rentals and pontoon boats also..for the entire week. It was well worth it and lots of fun. The kids rented almost every afternoon. I had read that the marinas on Bay Lake have changed the requirements from 12 and the height requirement..to being a licensed driver...perhaps this is if you are renting an individual sprite..not sharing with an adult. It will be a dissapointment..but what can you do?...

Psst, according to your trip log in your signature, I've been going to Fort Wilderness for about 6 years longer than your first trip to the Fort....lol (although granted, I don't remember much from before the age of 5!). People around here keep on seeming to think I'm some kind of 21 year old young whippersnapper, I wish! ;)

Born and raised in the Fort since 1975.................. :woohoo:

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh, he was wrong anyways, not as funny when that happens...lol. I actually could say to him "I'm old enough to remember the Fort in the 70's"!!!! lol

And no Bama is not because they have that weasel of a coach now :P No offense, Dolphins fan here...lol

Loved your trip details.
Your H.S. English teacher would be proud.
Stayed in #605 on Dec.9/06 thru dec.16/06. Reading your post rekindled all those memories. You'll love your early december trip. Biggest disappointment for us was the seasonal closure of Blizzard Beach. We've been to WDW 3 times since 2003 and it's been closed for refurbishment everytime.
I'm glad to hear the gator's still around the canal. It was 2 mos old when we were there.
Unfortunatly we witnessed it pull down a baby duck (it never resurfaced)from our canalside site while we were having breakfast outside. Momma duck spent three days calling for it non-stop!.
We took my mother with us. She's been to WDW at least 8 to 10 times and has always stayed at the Disney hotels. This was her first time camping and she can't wait to go again. She could not believe how relaxing the trip was compared to the usual hustle and bustle of conventional lodging. Just the daily grind of meal planning gets old after two days. Where to eat , when to eat, where to meet, etc.
Along with the pleasure of maintaing your normal dietary routine at the campground, she just loved being able to have her late afternoon tea with her feet up for an hour or so.
Can't wait to get back(9/28/07 - 10/06/07)

Sorry Colson39, I apologize.

That line you had about the carts being part of your history there, it kinda threw me. When you said the carts were a part of your history, you were referring only to "recent" history. Okay, I follow you now. Youngsters! :rotfl:

As for CNS, if you follow the Dolphins you were up on how his departure went down. Of course, every college coach, before jumping ship for another job, always says, "I'm the coach at HomeState U. and I'm not going anywhere". Of course, being a Dolphins fan, you may not have experienced it like the rest of the world. Daddy Don stayed forever, you guys chose to run Wanstadt (sp?) off, so this is a new experience for you more or less. Happens to the rest of us more frequently.

Nope, Bama won't make a BCS this year, I don't think. I think we improve to compete for the SEC West in Year 1, the SEC in Year 2, and National Championship #13 in Year 3.

No worries! :)

THe only problem is, most of the sports world viewed it just as us Dolphins fans did, that's he's a no character, lying, snake oil salesman. There was tons of stuff on ESPN with people talking about how absolutely dishonorable what he did was. What made it really bad, was that he talks like he is all high and mighty, but he doesn't practice what he preaches.

Now, if it had only been local sports media, I would understand. But they covered that for days in the national media. Trust me, Saban isn't nearly as good as you think he is, although he's definitely a better college football coach than a professional.

Wait until you see how he treats the "fans" and "journalists". He hates everyone, and trust me, when you guys go down the toilet, he's going to blame everyone but himself.

That being said, I do hope you guys do well, I've always been a casual Alabama fan :)
