does disney allow you to cancel a package or not?

I thought I read somewhere something to the affect of

package needs to be paid in full 45 days out.
if you cancel or change your trip than you pay 50 (us) to apply the change or cancellation, up to 6 days out.
and if you change or cancel within the 5-1 day than you pay 200 (us) to do so.

So does that mean you can cancel your trip upto a day before and only lose 200.
Can someone tell me if I am right or wrong.
Our travel agent is pushing trip insurance, and to include the disney part the price jumps more than 200 bucks. So not sure if its worth it or not.

thanks for the replys

Insurance is always worth it! You never know what tomorrow brings!

Just FYI, without insurance, your PHP are non-refundable. With the majority of packages once full payment is received the trip is non-refundable so without an insurance plan you are out the whole amount. Check the small print on the brochure for the company you booked with. Trip insurance is always a good investment. JMHO

I always get trip insurance. You never know what the future holds. Although a great vacation is all you have planned, an unexpected job loss, death or accident can occur. It's better to pay the trip insurance (quite minimal, actually) than to not have anything in place. Additionally, I always buy medical insurance as well if travelling outside of Canada. That way if an accident occurs, and I need to get back to Canada, I will be able to do so without worry of finances - and, honestly, who wants to pay for health care in the States?

Your trip insurance will almost certainly also include trip delay (airline schedule changes, missed connections etc) and trip interruption, which will pay for the cost of a 1 way flight home if an emergency occurs and you need to come home early.

I've cited this example before: I have a friend who goes to Arizona every spring for about 2 weeks. Last year she went down, and within 2 days of getting there her mother (at home) died. She did not have trip insurance, since she "knew she was going". The cost of the flight home would have been almost $2000 at the time, so she ended up not coming home early and missed her mother's funeral.

You never know what's going to happen.

Can I add trip insurance from disney later? I am holding two rooms for a week and plan to cancel one. I already have insurance on one package. My question is, If I hold another package, can I book the trip insurance at a later date ( i.e. 3 months before trip)

The answer is, it really depends. Technically the insurance is supposed to taken out when the initial deposit is paid. Sometime insurance companies will stick to that and not budge, and sometimes they'll let you do it with a few restrictions.

If it isn't when the deposit is paid, the policy is usually within 72 hours of the final payment of the non-refundable rate. Many of the places I have looked at have that policy.

I never buy trip cancellation insurance. I find it usually isn't worth the money. The OP is correct that the maximum liability to Disney is $200USD on a package (less if you cancel six days out). The other potential loss is to an airline -- I book on an airline with good change fees (JetBlue - $25USD per person). For a four person trip, the max liability is $300 USD. Trip insurance is roughly $100 USD -- so you're paying $100 to insure $300. Not a good value.

Where it gets a little more tricky is if you have to buy health insurance, etc. Some insurance companies bundle health insurance into their cancellation insurance.

We use TD Meloche Monnex to buy our travel health and cancellation insurance it is about 170 for our family of 5 soon to be 6 and it covers us for a max of 60 days away and pays for everything from hospital stays and scripts to trip cancellation and lost luggage etc. It is money well spent as far as I am concerned.

I'll take the opportunity to mention that cancellation insurance also includes interruption insurance. So if something happens that requires you to come home in the middle of your vacation, or cut your vacation short, the insurance will cover those expenses. It will reimburse you for the nonrefundable portion of your vacation that you've had to miss as well as paying the expenses to get you back home.

Example: The couple in my city that lost their home due to fire while they were on vacation. They flew home as soon we they were notified about it.
