So, we bought insurance for our trip in december. They said that if one of us gets sick, all we have to do is get a note from the dr and we can reschedule without penalty. The stipulation was that it has to be a new illness. So, because of my son's disease, he sometimes gets really sick and has to be hospitalized or just wouldn't be stable enough for travel. If it's a new illness but the complications are because of his underlying issues, does that still count as a "new illness?"

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

I would suggest you get someone with legal training, especially if they specialize in insurance, to review the policy. There are so many factors involved that an answer would not be available here.

Also, what is covered? For example, if you are going on a Cruise and also having air fare included that is one thing. If you are going to be staying at a Disney Resort and driving that is something else. For example, normally Disney will not penalize you (or charge more than about $200) if it is necessary to reschedule a trip to WDW due to illness, but for a Cruise it can get a lot more involved.

Travel Guard covers existing conditions if you buy the insurance within 10 days of booking your trip. Our son is diabetic and as long as he is controlling it, he is covered should something come up.
We did use the insurance when we cancelled a cruise due to my dad's being in ICU. Travel Guard sent lots of papers which his doctor had to fill out and determine if he advised us to cancel the trip--it was not real easy to get reimbursed and we did not get all the money because of miscalculations from the company.
I am glad we had it because we got back over $4000 on a policy we paid $129 for. It is also good if you are abroad and need to be medically airlifted from a ship.
It is not good though if you cancel because of say a cold or ear infection. A doctor has to sign off saying that he says you should not travel.

I've posted extensively about this as I was about ready to cancel our first cruise because of my son's pre-ex conditions and finding insurance.

We used this broker: http://www.tripinsurancestore.com. They sell the same travel insurance as others but with the difference is that you can actually talk to someone that KNOWS what the heck you're talking about. I felt very comfortable that they knew what they were talking about. I have no affiliation other than a satisfied customer.

See this on their site about pre-ex conditions and travel insurance: http://www.tripinsurancestore.com/3/pre-existing.shtml

I would not trust that what you've bought will cover your son if he gets sick if the new illness would cause complications due to his pre-ex conditions that someone else wouldn't have. If your trip is a cruise or you expect medical transport could be an issue I would definitely call that place about the pre-ex conditions and getting other insurance if possible.
