Trip insurance, should I buy it? What happens if there's a hurricane?

I'm wondering if I need to buy trip insurance. We are traveling Oct 26-Oct 31, so I'm a little concerned about hurricanes. We didn't buy a package, so the main thing I have to worry about is the airfare. Is it worth getting trip insurance for this? We are flying Midwest from Milwaukee. If a flight gets cancelled (say because of a possible hurricane), are you just out of luck or what happens? I'm a new flyer, so I have no idea. Thanks for your help. Also where would I purchase trip insurance?

Before you buy, be sure to ask what it covers. Many only cover medical emergencies. Some have wording that it only covers airfare if the airline is out of operation for over 24 hours. On the other hand, some cover extra expenses if you can't get home. Be sure to know what you are buying.

Last year and the year before when Southwest cancelled, they gave us a choice of flying the day before, anytime the week after, or having the ability to rebook within a year, at the same price. One trip last year we flew the day before, the other we had $49 tickets, and wanted to fly later in the year and found that we had to book seats in the same class. They were $79 in that same class when we wanted to fly, but they honored the $49. We also missed getting free tickets and they extended the time we had to get them (we just needed this one more flight). This wasn't written anywhere, it's just what they dicided to do for us. Each airline handles it differently.
Disney was great. When we added the night before, we were allowed to do it at the AP rate we had for the rest of the week. When we cancelled the second trip, they gave us a choice of all our money back, or a credit for when we did book.

:confused3 were going in Sept. and I am concerned about the same thing-dh ins't so worried??? havn't boughten the plane tickets yet.....but would like to soon.....not sure what to do.

Also, keep in mind that most major travel insurers won't cover losses related to services provided by providers in bankruptcy, so if you get a package it may include coverage you cannot take advantage of.

Check insuremytrip.com. They have many companies to choose from and you can compare policies.

We travel at the end of August and I have never gotten the trip insurance. If your flight is cancelled, you get a refund or airline credit. I will lose $200 on my WDW package, but the insurance is $119.

We are traveling to Mexico this summer and did purchase trip insurance for medical reasons and because our hotel is non-refundable.

I would be surprised if you lost that. Disney was great to us the past couple of years when our flights were cancelled.

Strange, I was just about to post this question. Wondering myself. I am not worried about a strike as we will most likely be on Southwest or Airtran, but concerned about weather problems. Hurricanes in Central FL are rare however, so I am leaning towards not purchasing it.

Like you said the chances that it will affect central Florida are pretty slim. And the hotel deposit would be refunded. So all I'd have to worry about is the airfare and it sounds like if the flight is cancelled because of hurricanes they reimburse you somehow.

Just be aware that your only concern should not be that your flight may be cancelled. If weather is bad enough you may not even be able to get to the airport - it's possible your flight wont be cancelled but you could miss your plane. Trip insurance would cover that.
