Trip Insurance from DCL

We always book trip insurance for our cruises - we get discounts and purchase Travel Insured - more coverage and better benefits and less expensive then what Disney insurance covers

Do most people buy the trip insurance from DCL? If you don't then do you purchase it from somewhere else? Has anyone had experience having to file a claim with it.
We always buy trip insurance through DCL. Unfortunately, we had to use it when our grandson (family linked with our cruise) was diagnosed with cancer two months before the cruise. Our daughter had to get extensive forms completed by the doctors/hospital (at an already bad time), but all of us got all of our cruise money returned, minus the cost of the insurance. Since we were in concierge, that was a very large cruise amount.

Most 3rd party coverage will be less expensive, and may have higher coverage limits. It depends what your primary interest is for the insurance. DCL coverage will not include pre-existing conditions and only covers those components of your vacation purchased through DCL (i.e., cruise but not air if you book that yourself). DCL coverage does include the extra piece in that if your claim is denied (not covered by the insurance) then DCL will give a 75% credit to use towards a future cruise; I believe that must be taken within a specified period of time. You can go online to a trip insurance comparison website to see various products/limits/premiums offered.

Enjoy your cruise!

@SeaNana -- so sorry to hear that! I hope your little guy is getting better! Sending prayers his way.

We've bought insurance from an outside website, and from DCL. Luckily no need to make a claim. As was mentioned, your needs determine your insurance. Also, if you are paying for your trip (or pieces of the trip) with a credit card, you may already be insured through them. You just need to call them to find out what your coverage is.
Overall, you are just insuring against risk-if only going On a shorter trip to a destination with lower risk and your health is good, then maybe you just want to accept the risk of no insurance Bc you can afford the expected costs that might arise. Once you are done with the trip, any money you spent is gone. If you need it however, then you will be thankful you have it. Personally, with kids, I would always make sure to have it (separate policy or through my cc), but that's just my opinion.

Again, I cannot stress enough the fact that you may already be covered by a different insurance : credit card, health insurance, etc.

Check before buying something you may not need.

Would a credit card cover if we had to cancel at the last minute?

We made a claim on DCL's insurance (underwritten by Aon) last January when I fell ill 48 hours before sailing.
We provided documentation from my physician and our claim was paid within 30 days.

It all depends on whether your credit card offers travel insurance, and exactly what that coverage includes. You should contact your credit card issuer for details. Even among cards that offer travel insurance, coverage can vary.

Enjoy your cruise!

We always take the insurance that DCL offers. I find it more simple to just go with them... I don't have the time to shop insurances and I find their coverage pretty good (and affordable).

We also have started using only our credit card coverage. We save alot not using dcl's trip insurance anymore. We pay the cruise deposit with our credit card so we have their trip insurance, lost luggage insurance, etc. Our credit card does not require that the entire cost be paid with their card, just some of it. Just check you credit card's trip insurance coverage online to make sure the coverage is what you want and need. Then we pay the rest of the cruise cost with Disney gift cards purchased at target and then loaded onto the dis vacation account, for the extra discounts, of course... Also, check your medical insurance and see if it will cover you on your cruise and in the ports to be sure.

I am so glad to read that ! People don't often realise they already have good covers.

Very true - I was happy to find out what my cc covered. However, everyone should re-check coverage with cc or other personal sources if it has been awhile, as coverage can change. Also, with a bigger, lengthier trip to various destinations (like a European cruise that hits many ports/countries), some people will still want an extra policy, particularly if there is the potential for a health issue.
Anyway, it was enlightening to see the coverage I had through my cc, and the various policies and associated costs/ coverage with an extra policy. Anyone who wishes to buy a policy that will cover a pre-existing condition should know that there is often a 7-14 window from the date of trip deposit, where a policy needs to be purchased in order to cover that pre existing condition. Also, there are policies that offer "cancel for any reason" coverage, some also have "cancel due to work reasons" clauses as well. Important for certain people to look into, if they feel these are possibilities.
