I am looking at trip insurance for my June Dream cruise; refresh my memory, I just have to purchase before I pay in full, correct?
Also, here is another question. I am taking a very convoluted route to MCO:
1) leaving 5 days ahead of my cruise and flying to Pensacola to see my daughter's family (she is having a baby around first of June)
2) day before cruise, flying from Pensacola to MCO, meeting DH who is flying right to MCO that day. Staying at Copper Creek night before
3) at end of cruise we are both flying together back home.

Should I include all of those flights in the total for insurance?

VPP thru DCL is only for the cruise portion of your vacation. You would want to purchase insurance for flights seperately if you wish to cover all legs of your trip.

You should include in the "trip cost" for insurance any costs that you'd want to be refunded if you cancel or cut short the trip. This can include flights, hotel stays, and ground-transportation reservations that are non-refundable.

If you want coverage for pre-existing conditions, you need to either purchase insurance when the first payment is made, or select insurance that explicitly covers pre-existing conditions when purchased later.

If you don't have pre-existing conditions (anything for which you've seen a doctor that might flare up before or during the trip and cause you to cancel the trip or seek medical care during the trip), then you can wait until you make non-refundable payments to buy insurance. You can wait even longer (until shortly before departure for some policies), but you run the risk of having something happen that causes you to cancel.

Insurance through DCL is purchased at PIF. Insurance through a third party may be purchased at any point - before or after PIF - recognizing that some components may not be available or may cost more if purchased later.

I would purchase through a third party and include your full travel plans. Insurance through DCL won’t cover pre- or post-cruise travel unless those components are booked through DCL.

Enjoy your cruise!

I always book through a third-party carrier instead of through DCL so that I can include all of my family's travel plans to/from. Be aware that -- at least in my experience -- the insurance company will ask for the date when you booked your cruise, and insurance costs increase as you get closer to your travel date. The earlier you purchase, the better.

We have been purchasing insurance through third parties because we want cancel for any reason coverage. We also found we could get much higher medical and medical evacuation coverage using other carriers and the cost for the extra coverage was not that much more than the insurance DCL offered. When you have to purchase it depends on the carrier. We have used companies that required payment within 10 days of initial payment; and also companies that require purchase by the final payment date.

As other have stated cover your entire trip.

I would suggest list what coverages are important to you - Lost Luggage, medical coverage, cancel for any reason, cancel for work reasons, etc... and then search for policies based on those items.

Have a fantastic trip

Most of the ones I have seen looking through 3rd party coverage don't offer "cancel for any reason" but my main reasons are my parents (86 and 89) and death of a family member seems to be covered under medical. Our only pre-existing conditions belong to DH and I would hope if they flare up they would do it before my cruise cancel deadline because I'm not getting many offers for that type of coverage either. I know, I should have looked closer to my book date last summer.
