Trip Insurance and renting a vacation home

Anyone rented a vacation home and gotten separate trip insurance? I would love to rent a vacation home. I think it would be the best choice for our family, but my husband is having real issues with needing to pay in full well before arrival and then losing our entire payment if we cancel within 30 days. He has older grandparents and his dad is going through lung cancer treatment (and we're looking at a trip almost 10 months from now), so there is a slim possibility that something unfortunate could happen just prior to leaving. Most likely, we'd be able to cancel long before the 30 days (i.e. if he can't get the time off from work, etc.), but he thinks trip insurance might not be a bad idea (and the homeowners recommend it). Has anyone purchased separate trip insurance? What company did you use? Did you need it, and if you did, how did the claim process go? We've always either stayed at Disney, purchasing the package trip insurance, or stayed in an offsite hotel, which you can cancel up to 6 pm on the day of arrival without penalty.

I'm thinking that if we buy trip insurance, we only need to buy it on the lodging and air portions of our vacation, correct? Our tickets would be OK because the expiration period doesn't start until our first use, we could cancel the rental car without penalty and the food/souvenir budget could be saved for another date.

I am curious too. I am concerned about getting snowed in up here in Maine and not being able to get a flight down to Florida during our vacation week. We have already booked our townhome, I wonder if I can purchase insurance as long as I haven't put down the final payment. I hope someone can answer our questions.

Do you have insurance if you buy by crdit card?
As homeowner,Id definately recommend buying Insurance as no refunds are standard policy.

Good Luck,
Lynn

I've wondered this before myself. I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I'll be interested to see what advice you get. :)

We booked our last trip with Florida Leisure via their online web site. I noticed they had an insurance option but living in Sth Florida we didn't take it up. I'm sure that other companies have this option as well so keep checking other web sites.

We have used travel insurance when a family member was ill
and the travel expenses non-refundable (not when we
use frequent flyer tickets since that would not be covered.)
It is a great idea in certain cases. Some even help in case
of hurricane and inclement weather cancellations. Go to
fodors.com and get recommendations.
