our trip is booked and paid for, and no have 40 days to go. They say we will get a package in the mail a couple of weeks before we leave. We haven't been to the World in quite a while and have never stayed on site. We are staying a week with the dining plan. What are they sending us in the mail? Does each one of us get a "dog tag" or something to give us access, and keep track of meals? If we checkin online, do we just walk up to the desk, show id and get a key?

The mail that you get will contain the invoice with details of your package: resort details (type of room booked), type of park tickets, type of dining plan.

It will also have a bunch of coupons for things like mini golf, boat rentals, arcade cards. And it will have a couple of WDW luggage tags.

If you have signed up for Magic Express you will get a separate mail with your ME luggage tags.

Since you have signed up for the dining plan, if it is the DDP (not the QSDP) you need to book your Table Service ADRs (Reservations). And you need to do it soon, since this (in Disney terms) is a last minute reservation. You may have difficulty getting your first choices, since most WDW vets do this around 180 days out.

You should have figured out which park you will do on each day of your visit first, to make everything more time efficient. In other words, make all of your ADRs for restaurants in and around the MK on a MK day. A major waste of time to plan an Epcot day, but have a breakfast planned at AKL.

You can check in online if you prefer.
When you arrive at the hotel, give them the documents showing your resort confirmation number and proof of payment (the invoice from your mail). You will be given the KTTW card for each person in your party. This is your room key card, park entry card, dining plan payment, and allows charging privileges to your room if you have left a credit card number at check in for this purpose.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the response. I actually did my ADR's back in September, so I'm good with that. I wasn't aware of the KTTW card and how that worked. It sounds handy to only have 1 card to keep track of for each of us. Are they a laminated card or plastic like a typical hotel key? Do they come on a lanyard or should we bring one for each of us?

It is the same size and make as a standard credit card.

Your dining plan points are "pooled" by the room, so you only need to present one card at each meal. If someone is alone in the park, you can use that card.

You can add a credit card/debit card/gift card, etc. to your KTTW, so you can also use that for charging.

It does not come with a lanyard; you will have to purchase one yourself. They are in the gift shop at the resort.

It is good to note also, especially if you are a large group, it is good to stop at the concierge desk each night when you return, to have a print-out of your charges and your used dining plan points. It is a back-up to keeping track of what you have used and charged.
