The Swan & Dolphin reviews on Trip Advisor are brutal. Anyone know how reliable they are?

About as reliable as they are for non-Disney things like lodging, food, attraction….I avoid them unless there are no other sources as they seem to be the breading ground for “I want something free trolls”. The DIS/ boards and many other reliable sites are my go to. There are many here that love the Swa-lophin.

With most of those review sites, you get a lot of the chronic complainers or people who like to exaggerate. I don't find them to be of much value whether for restaurants or hotels.

I generally don't find trip advisor helpful.
For anything near WDW I'd ask and read here.

Agree with everyone here, ignore trip advisor reviews. We have stayed at both of them a few times. Mostly for a night or two. Never for a long trip. It was always nice rooms, clean, and we enjoyed the short walk to Epcot and HS. Just got to watch out for the resort fees. They can be pretty expensive there.

It's very rare for someone to have a standard, acceptable, no issues stay at a hotel to leave a review.
It's uncommon for someone to have an excellent, above average stay at a hotel to leave a review.
It's quite common for someone who had an issue, or a disappointing stay at a hotel to leave a review.

You can almost guarantee that if someone really dislikes something they will leave a review.

This was my exact thought. While the vast majority will have outstanding stays, very few will leave a positive review, especially for a property like the Swan or Dolphin, since they are already really well known. I will often leave a stellar review if it’s an independent hotel or a place that isn’t really well known. But for a place on, say, Disney property, I’d be more inclined to assume that I can’t say anything else that hasn’t already been said in hundreds of other reviews.

And if a hotel/restaurant already has 100+ good reviews, people see less of a need to leave another one.

But, if a hotel has a few dozen bad reviews some people love to add another one.
