So, we are planning a family trip. My husband and I and our 2 kids will be staying in a 2 bedroom for 10 days, but my sister and her husband will be staying with us, for only 7 of the days. How does it work for the dining plan? Does everyone have to purchase it for the 10 days even though they are staying a shorter time than us?

Yes. All persons must buy the plan and all must buy it for the entire reservation period.

Hate to piggy back but I have a question on the same beat:

What about the Free Dining Disney is offering does this apply to DVC reservations, if you rent points?

You can only get free dining if you pay rack rate for a room through central reservations and then purchase at least a one day ticket for everyone in the room.

You can purchase DDP if you rent points, but there is no "free" dining with points reservations -- for owners or renters.

The deadline for "free DDP" passed on June 24 anyway. As 4mcbjCtr says, "free DDP" is a package, and the package includes rack rate (in most cases) for your room, tickets, and the dining plan.

You could get two different reservations and get the DDP for the 7 days only. Otherwise, as DP noted, you'll have to pay for all for the entire 10 days. You could plan meals that would use more of the TS credits, you could do TS more than once in a day and any one of a number of other variations. Personally I would not get it for 10 days unless you fall into a specialty area such as your kids are 9 or less but don't simply eat kids meals. Obviously you would need to take the other parties desires into consideration as well. One option is to change to a 1 BR and get a studio for the time your sister will be with you. You could always ask they they be combined into a 2 BR for those 7 days.

One point to consider. The DDP is assigned to the whole room, not to each individual. So if you have 4 adults and 4 kids, you will get 4 adult table service meals each day & 4 kids table service meals each day. For a total of 40 adult tables service meals & 40 kids table service meals if staying for 10 days. The point being they can be used by anyone in the party. So, why not take the dining plan and then go to a dinner show with the extra table service meals. They cost 2 table service meals, and in my opionion are worth it. Of course you could also use the extra points to do a character breakfast and a sit down dinner the same day. The point being having to pay for and getting extra meal credits is not all bad. Once we added an extra person to our room we thought was coming, when they cancelled we left them on the reservation & just ate their food. It allowed for a few litte extras that were really worth the money. I think a Aloha show and a character breakfast.
