travelling with water/Juice boxes as checked baggage

first, not sure if this is the right section to post, sorry if not.

This might just be a really silly idea but wondering if anyone has done it or might think it would work.

I really want to get water and juice shipped to resort but not sure yet. I don't want to do the grocery delivery. and then while I'm thinking, an idea came up......

is it possible to put bottled water and juice boxes in a box which I check as checked luggage??? it won't go over the checked baggage weight limit and we still have an allowance left.

if airline/airport would allow, is it possible the water bottles or juice boxes might explode due to the pressure?

I always pack some bottles of water and a bottle of vodka and have never had a problem. I bubble wrap the vodka and put it in a large ziplock bag just incase.

I don't do anything with the water. If it leaks or spills, it's only water!

Please consider very strongly that you will need to pack such items so that not only YOUR stuff is kept dry, but also that it will not leak out of your luggage onto other people's luggage and soak into their possessions.

A double ziploc bag and some padding around the water/juice boxes may well be sufficient, but please don't think "it's only water" as you have no idea what other passengers will have in their bags. Several posters here have reported having belongings ruined by liquid leaks in the baggage hold.

Maybe water won't ruin your belongings, but it will ruin other people's. Please double bag your water.

OP, it won't explode because of the pressure, but luggage is handled very roughly. If you insist on packing it (which I don't recommend) please double bag everything and make sure that you surround everything with your clothes, both to help protect it from busting and to help absorb anything if it does leak so you don't ruin someone else's things.

If I do this, I will definitely wrap it up insanely. I don't even want to ruin my own belongings, not best way to start trip with wet clothes...so no worries there, lol.

I think I might just ship water to resort and pack the small little juice in checked baggage. They are small enough to go in a large lock and lock container so it will be extra secured.

wrap your juice or water in diapers....if they leak the diapers will absorb it...then double bag it and sushion it with clothing.


I think leaks tend to occur as a result of the weight of other bags on top of yours rather than a pressure change.....the cargo area is the same as cabin pressure.

I always pack juice boxes in my checked luggage and have never had a problem with them leaking. I do, double pack them in the 2 gallon zip lock bags and extra padding. Wrapping them in a diaper is a good suggestion ( along with putting them in a zip lock).

Water and juice boxes are relatively inexpensive to buy in FL. Are the few dollars saved by packing it in checked luggage really worth the hassle and potential damage to your luggage and that of others? Even if you buy that stuff at WDW prices, consider it a vacation expense.

I have an old (from the 80's) Samsonite hard sided case that we use when we bring something we don't want broken. I think it would work for water/juice. We also have plastic containers we pack our wet stuff in. (Shampoo, sunscreen, toothpaste. etc.) We have those plastic shoe boxes. The heavy duty ones keep stuff from getting crushed. (When we are there I put all our receipts in there from the trip) I usually put our beach towels in with the wet items.

I love the diaper idea! or a sham-wow? to absorb leaks inside the many ziplock bags we use. I put stuff into zip lock bags then towels into a large space saver bag.

We brought wine made in my nieces home town to her wedding in 2008. I was a nervous nelly... every bottle made it in that hard sided case with bubble Wrap, space savers bags, trash bags and beach towels. I about worried my self sick on the plane and waiting for baggage. I will so never do that again even thought it turned out fine.

So it is very possible!

For me it is not the expense. My DH refuses to drink Florida tap or their brand spring water (the one that starts with Zeph...can't remember) because of the taste.

My toddler is just going through a phase and would only drink one specific juice box and hence my search to make sure it gets down there.


Anyway.... Thanks to all. I am glad others have tried this, not so silly idea afterall. I decide to just check baggage the juice and will order online the water to ship directly.

Brilliant idea on the lock & lock, by the way. I'd still use a zip-top bag for extra security, but the L&L really shouldn't leak - even if one individual container opens.

I would check with your airline to see if it is permited as checked baggage. I know of one airline that doesnt allow coolers/boxes with ice in them (popular with the fishermen) as they can leak either onto other baggage or electrical stuff!

One year I ordered water from Staples and had it sent to the resort. It was waiting for us at check in. It worked great.
