That is a good point about it not being alot for them to organise since he will already be in the US and for not having to take him through customs. That would be a more complicated situation for sure.

You sound really comfortable with this idea if it comes to fruition so I think you should go for it if the opportunity presents itself.

Funny, I've run into this boys parents about three times this week at local market/coffee shop and almost mentioned it to them yesterday. But thought I really have to wait. I wondered if it's a sign, that I keep running into them, when I have probably seen them twice since school went back and then suddenly they are everywhere. Oh why am I so superstitious and believe in signs and things happen for a reason Time will tell

From the perspective of someone who would take another child on holidays with us and as a parent who would allow their child to travel with another family...

It would firstly need to be with a family that I am very comfortable with and close to, for various reasons. You need to be prepared to find out all sorts of things about the child! and finances obviously need to be discussed. I'd be open about what you are willing to pay and what you are not, it is then up to them to decide whether or not they are happy with it.

If it were my child being invited, I would definitely give my child enough money for snacks, souvenirs. I would discuss with the the family specifically about meals and entries to attractions etc

If I were the family inviting the child, I would pay for most things including meals and days out as I would only be doing as a treat for my child. However, I think it is reasonable that the child's parents would give them some money for souvenirs or snacks.

Just a little update.

I had the boy in question over today and we were going to a local amusement centre. When his mum dropped him off she told me that he had money for the day I told her he didn't need any money, that it was fine and thanked her.

So that has put one of the things in my mind at ease. If they sent their child with money for a very inexpensive outing, they will be the type to send him with spending money for a week long vacation He's a great kid, really well mannered, polite and not too loud (actually at my son's birthday party, he was the only child that actually thanked me for having him)

I still haven't decide if we will even invite him but I feel better knowing that my major worry (the spending money) is all good

That is a huge tick then isn't it. And you seem to enjoy his company and since he is very well mannered and not crazy, that is another tick.

Now just to mull it over some more and take the plunge.
