Travellers Cheques in NYC

Can anyone tell me if Dollar travellers cheques are useable in shops and restaurants in New York just like cash as they are in Florida, or will I need to exchange them at a bank?

TC's are fine in NYC, only thing is twice in the same drug store for a $20 TC they wanted ID which was ok as I always carry my photocard DL!!

Thanks for the advice. I've alo noticed the travellers cheques I've been sent out are VISA rather than American Express (Which I've always had before). I presume this isn't a problem and they will have seen plenty of VISA travellers cheques before??
