DS was put on antibiotic today that has to be refrigerated....we fly out Saturday morning.....so i am in a quandry as to how we will travel with this med and how to keep it at the hotel....staying at Pop Century. :confused3

For the trip down I would just get an insulated bottle carrier- I don't know what they are technically called I had one that would hold 2 baby bottles and it was really cheap at Walmart. You can get an icepack or two and freeze them and put them in the "little cooler" with the medicine. Unless you've got a fridge, I don't know what else you can do with them in the room...sorry :(

Are you allowed to have ice packs on planes now with the gel? If not, you can use frozen veggies in an insulated lunch box. I would bring a collapsible cooler and put it in the tub. Fill it with ice at the ice machine in the am and the pm. Or just over-night if you have to bring it with you int he parks. Bring lots of zip-lock bags and you can put the med in the cooler/lunch bag with bags of ice at the parks. Just replace the ice at every meal by ordering a cup of ice. I am pretty sure they will give it to you free of charge.

I would recommend calling the pharmacist and asking if it's okay to be at room temp for the day. Some anitbiotics don't actually need to be refrigerated, it's just because they taste better that way.

Medicines are exempt from new restrictions and the 3oz restriction - information can be found here:
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

About the 5th pararagraphs down -

"Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint."

Another idea is to ask the pharmicist to give you the prescription as powder and allow you to mix the water in after you arrive or ask the DR if there is an alternative that dosen't have to be refridgerated.

My daughter was on antibiotics everyday for a kidney disorder(thankfully outgrown:woohoo: ) so we are very familiar with having to do this. We usually drive to Florida from NJ and what we did was get a McDonald's large cup filled with ice and put the bottle in there with the lid and keep replacing the ice. Even on a plane, you could easily put it in a big cup surrounded by ice and then keep replacing the ice on the plane. If you haven't filled the prescription yet, which by this late hour, you probably have, there are other antibiotics that don't need refrigeration such as Omnicef which is used very much the same as Amoxicillin or Augmentin (which need refrig).

Also, if you need refrigeration at the hotel and it is a medical reason, most hotels waive the fee. Not sure if this holds true at Disney but worth the question.

For prescription med's, yes. We flew to Fl in July and they didn't blink an eye. I just pulled the bag out and said it was prescription & had to be refrigerated.

Bring the med. in a baggie of ice. If they empty the ice have an extra baggie and go get ice. No big deal. The liquid has to be in the standard airplane size now required baggie. As long as it is they can only take the ice. It is illegal to remove from a passenger medication in their name in the actual prescribed and labeled bottle even out of country.

I'm on an injectible diabetes medicine that has to be refrigerated. As long as you have your daughters name directly on the prescription (and a letter from the doc helps too if you can get one), they will let you bring it through whether it's in a bag w/ gel or a baggie of ice.

Here's a link to the tsa page specifically talking about prescription medications. It does say on another page that you can bring freezer packs along for medications that require refrigeration. If you do that, the medication probably should be labeled to say it requires refrigeration (just to make sure there are no problems).

Also, I agree with the suggestion to contact the Pharmacist and ask whether refrigeration is required or recommended for the antibiotic. If it's just recommended (as was posted, because it tastes better that way), you may be able to cool an individual does when you need it, rather than keeping all of it cold.
Once you get to the resort, you can request a medication refrigerator. Sometimes you will get a dorm size refrigerator. Sometimes, you will get one about the size of a shoe box. But, they will provide a refrigerator of some kind for medical needs.

Bold is mine as this is not true - as per the link I posted above. Medicines and a few other liquids are exempt from the 3oz rule and don't have to be in your 3-1-1 quart size ziplock. Simply declare them to the TSA agent (ie show them what you have and why) separately from your carryon and your ziplock. You can use a soft sided cooler and an ice pack to keep it cool.

Last time we were at Disney. My DD was also on an antibiotic that needed refrigeration. We told the front desk that we needed a fridge because of this (we had planned on paying). They did not charge us anything. We always need a fridge now as my husband is Type I Diabetic, so we need for his insulin. Every hotel we have stayed at has been very accomodating and provided fridges at "no charge".

We needed a fridge for medication in late 2005 and we were not charged for it.

I would check with your doctor about your diabetes medication. If you're taking insulin, despite what you've heard. It doesn't have to be refrigerated. If you use it often enough, which most diabetics do, you will surely use up the vial before it expires.
