traveling with cameras

Does anyone know if I can put a video camera in my suitcase (I know that it fragile..and I would risk having it out of my sight for the flight)? I already have a camera that I will be carrying on. I am less concerned about the video camera...and it would help me to have less things to carry. I read on the Delta website that laptops MUST be carried on...but I couldn't find anything regarding checking cameras.
