Hi,
Does anyone know if passengers are allowed to have electronics in their carry-on luggage now? We would like to keep our brand new camcorder with us and aviod placing it in the checked luggage if possible. We are flying Airtran out of PHL in 4 days.
Thanks!

No problem - there are no special restrictions on camcorders or other electronics (other than the standard can't use them during takeoff/landing etc.)

You will need to take it out of your bag and send it through separately at the security checkpoint. Do not place it in your luggage if you ever want to see it again.

I usually pack a huge zip-loc baggie with all my electronic stuff...camcorder, digital camera, DVD player, cell phones, chargers etc. Then, when I get to the security line, I just haul it out of my carryon bag, send it through and then divvy it up when we are at the gate. The security people seem to appreciate being able to actually see all the electronices.

Cell phones, dvd players, chargers don't need to come out of your bag. The only things that must go through separately are camcorders and laptops. Digital cameras can stay in the bag. No need to advertise what all you are carrying.

You are absolutely right. It just makes it easier for us to do it in one big bag. I have also had several security workers thank me for making life a bit easier for them. I don't think they were planning on swiping my bag later on. Since my bag never leaves my side, I'm not too concerned about anyone knowing what's in it. I once left a roll of quarters in the bottom of my carryon...for those dratted pressed penny machines and the laundry...well, all 'heck' broke loose when they couldn't locate the suspicious object in my carryon...and I completely forgot it was in there. I imagine that the poor people in line behind me were not nominating me for 'favorite person in the security line' that day!! Nope, now I put all electronics and money in one plastic bag. Works for me, may not work for others.

DH & DS always get pulled aside for extra screening (they've got the same name)...assume the name is on watch list.

Make sure that your batteries are charged for both digital & camcorders - they can ask you to turn them on - I assume to make sure they're "actual working cameras" as opposed to something nefarious.

We're never put out by this extra attention, the more the merrier IMO.

Not once have I ever seen security ask a passenger to turn on an electronics item, except in the days when computers had to be checked (you no longer have to turn them on).

Not only thru airline security but, @ Kennedy Space Center...assume to determine whether they are really recording devices:confused3 .

As I said earlier, not a biggie for our family - we're used to it, bunch of shifty looking charactars I guess.:rotfl:
