Travelers Checks

Im not too sure how they work, but would it be wise to some before going to DW?

If you plan to pay with cash and not put everything on a card, then the Traveler's Checks would be great. You pay a small fee per $100 of checks at most banks, or free from AAA if you are a member. You sign them when you get them at the bank, then sign them again as you use them. Most places take them just like cash. You get your change back in cash. Then when that cash runs out, just use another traveler's check.

The benefit to travellers checks is that if you lose them or they get stolen, they can be replaced (unlike cash).

We used them on our last trip and it is a great way to stay in your budget. I didn't want to have to add up receipts every night to see how much we were putting on a credit card. Just be sure not to ask for $2,000 in $20s when you go the bank like DH accidentally did (the teller actually just misunderstood him). That was an awful lot of traveler's checks and he had to sign every one of them.

Being a banker, I say get the travelers checks, they are wonderful. And while some banks charge most banks do not as long as you have a deposit account. All of the checks will have the same #'s except for the last 4 digits and you will have a log sheet w/ the 800 # on it in case you loose or the checks or stolen. Keep the log sheet seperate that way if your checks go missing you will have the phone # for American Express.

If you're looking for a good deal...you can also get a traveler's cheque card from American Express and currently they have a special where you get a free companion airfare when booking with them. I think it does cost a $15 processing fee with a minimum of $300 put on the card. Can check it out at the American Express website.

JMHO but financially and convenience-wise, I'd rather charge everything to my rewards VISA card. It is easier to carry - fits right in my wallet. And I earn rewards points on every purchase. Personally, we use a Marriott VISA and earn points toward free hotel stays. And we still have protection if the card is lost or stolen.
