I am looking for a "Travel Tripod" that is short when collapsed, but can extend up at least 60". I am willing to give up some sturdiness as this will not be my primary tripod. I am going for portability.

I saw a monopod that has 3 legs that come out of the base for hybrid tripod/monopod. This might work, but I want it to be compact when collapsed so it can be put in my carry-on backback.

Anyone have something like this monopod/tripod or a compact travel tripod? What do you like about it? What do you hate about it? Would you buy it again knowing what you know now?

Funny you should ask. I just looked at two monopods that had legs. I am going to china but did not want to take a tripod. I thought everyone I looked at was either cumbersome to use or just too heavy. I was actually pretty disappointed in how dificult it was to set up. The owner of the local photography store I use took the same one to China this summer for the eclipse. He said he got stopped a lot at airports for security reasons with it in his suit case!

I have actually ended up with a Benro chinese made carbon fiber Travel tripod that will go to 57". It is a C-069 Travel Angel. It weighs only 1lb 7oz and holds 13.2lbs. It is not cheap but 1/2 price of a Gitzo similar one. I use the medium size RRS ballhead. Not an inexpensive setup but something I will really get some use out of. I also folds down to only 13.4 in. It is a five leg segment which is kind of a pain but you do what you have to for size.

I suppose that it is a bit pricey. It's a limited edition, though. And they engrave your name in one of the legs.

Well Mark I will consider it for your birthday. I just did not know that you really wanted a tripod with my name on it?!

Thanks for the suggestions so far, but unless I can use my Disney Birthday fun card, my choices are to go cheap or get nothing at all.

I found this at a store this morning for $13.

Targus TG-42TT 42-Inch 8-Section Travel Tripod
It is about the overall size of a small umbrella. I loved the size, but not the reviews I've read. I am considering this as it is only $13 and if it really does stink returning it.

Are there any real tripods that are similar in size? Have you tried this one yourself? Again, I already have a regular tripod, I am looking for something I can stick in my bag and have it as crutch if the situation presents itself.
