Travel to Riviera Maya - is it Safe?

I think we've decided against Riviera Maya. We are looking at other beaches - possibly even the Gulf Coast of FL.

We want sand, sun and water with no (or little) surf.

Maybe Naples, Ft. Lauderdale, or a Key?

Or, possibly S. Maarten? Or Grand Caymen?

In August, I would be WAY more worried about hurricanes than anything else!
