I have a son that just turned 18 so he is now an "adult". He does not drive yet, but he does have a passport. Will his passport be sufficient or does he have to get a non drivers I.D. card before we travel next month?

Just a passport is sufficient. Being 18, he would need to take it off the ship with him at every port stop.

We cruise with passports, but leave them in the stateroom safe while in port and use our state issued ids (drivers licenses) while in port. State IDs are smaller and easier to carry, plus cheaper to replace if lost.

Passports are enough, and I personally like to take them off the ship with me when I go into port. If something should happen and you miss the boat or some sort of medical emergency it is much better to have a passport with you

Pretty sure passport trumps driver's license as you don't have to also carry a copy of your birth certificate if you have the passport.
