Travel Insurance

No doubt they will take the premium, its getting them to pay out thats the problem. I used to use them but they wouldn't pay out for the ash cloud, I was about £1,000 out of pocket, hopefully they have improved.

Also not a fan of insure and go.

We had to take them to the ombudsman to get a payout when DD had chickenpox in florida.

I deal with insurers as part of my job so made sure I had names of people i'd spoken to, copy emails and faxes. eg they denied sending emails I had copies of.

What irked me was i'd saved them money - eg virgin had rearranged the flights at no cost after I spoke to them/faxed them docs (they didn't have to) saved insurers £2000 plus for new flights. Wished i'd not bothered!

I suspect other insurers are just as bad though. I went through top dog this time - they did top up policies for medical conditions so we have an annual family policy and a top up for me (have rare breathing condition)

Unfortunately, as this situation had not occurred before, most insurance policies didnt provide cover. However, they are actually underwritten by a different company now and its the underwriter thats make the decision not to cover as opposed to the insurance company. Insure and Go would have had little say it. Very few TI companies covered the ash cloud.

Like all Insurance policies if theres an exclusion they'll use it.
