I need to sort out travel insurance for our trip in April nd have been looking around. I note that coverage for personal items is usually limited at £250 per single item and a total limit of £1500.

This would not cover watch, camcorder, photography equipment etc...what do you guys do to cover valuables. As part of our house insuranace we are protected for loss of personal items whilst away from the home but I doubt it applies to traveling abroad?

Would appreciate some help

thanks
Rob

I insure with Insure and Go their top policy (Black cover) It covers upto £2,500 for each insured person So I presume we are covered upto £7,500 for the 3 of us but I also have an all risks policy (extension on house policy) covering me for £2,500 for Jewellery and photographic equipment.
I found this to be the best cover I could find last year when I was looking. They do about 5 levels of cover. This was about £140 family cover for 1 year anywhere in the world.
Never made a claim so can't comment on ther claims service.

Thanks for the tip with Insure and Go - I've just bought an Annual Policy from them - dead easy! :thumbsup2

Actually it is worth checking if your Household Insurance All Risks cover will cover you. I work for an insurance company and ours would cover you worldwide for a period of 60 days in any one premium year.

Obviously yours may be different but it is quite standard for cover abroad for a limited amount of time to be included.

Used them last year for our holiday to Turkey (Icmeler - beautiful place!). Amazingly good price compared to the other few places I looked. Using them for this trip to Disney as well.

I didnt see an option for the 'Black cover' though? Only Bronze, Silver and Gold. Anyway, the Gold option is great value for our forthcoming trip (just over £40 covering both me and my son!) :)

We have had to claim from Insure and Go. One of the simplest insurance claims I have ever had to do. Cheque by return of post for delayed flight.

We also had damaged luggage but missed the fact that we should have had it confirmed as damaged by airport staff before leaving the airport for the claim to be valid. As the flight (from Spain) was delayed 14 hours, we didn't even think about that - just wanted to get home. But it's worth knowing.

Good to know, Its easy enough to find insurance but never know how good the company is until a claim.
I tried to claim on my Asda policy a few years back, gave up in the end after phone was never answered, didn't reply to emails etc. They did actually change their underinsurers within a few months so I guess they had problems with the old company.

Great tip. Just Phoned and confirmed our personal possesions whilst away from home does cover us for £2500 per claim and up to £2000 per a single item.

Thanks Wayneg for the recommendation for insureandgo. Got the Black policy for annual cover for me and the family for £110 (reduced premium due to coverage in home contents cover already in place). It was interesting that Halifax, due to DD having asthma, more than doubled their standrad policy cover price to a whooping £227! The advisor asked if i wanted to take a note of the quote ref number.....ehhh...no!
