Travel Insurance When Vacationing On Pts

Is it possible to buy some sort of "insurance" to cover points that I will need to borrow for our next DVC trip? One member of the party has a health condition that could worsen as the trip nears. I'd hate to loose 1.5 years worth of points if the trip falls apart in the days preceeding check in.

When you book a stay, your printed confirmation will include details on travel insurance that is available. Some things to watch:

* The payoff rate is normally only $5 per point. That barely covers your maintenance fees for the year. You do NOT get your points back.

* I would suggest getting full details on the situations covered. The situation must match a given set of criteria in order to qualify for a claim.

* Pay particular attention to the timing of the cancellation. The only way that points are actually lost is if you fail to show up on the check-in date. You can cancel as late as 24 hours in advance and still get the points back--albeit in a Holding Account. My guess is that you would not qualify to file a claim unless the cancellation was uncontrollably forced less than 24 hours out.
