Travel Insurance that Pays Cash For Lost Points

I know that there is travel insurance offered through DVC. But my understanding is that it only reimburses for maintenance fees. I have a trip scheduled for January that involves current December UY points, as well as some banked and borrowed points. I would figure that the loss of a 7 night stay in a one bedroom villa at the BWV would be worth at least $2,000, not including airfare.

Are there any travel insurance companies that actually reimburse cash for the value of points lost? If so, how do they calculate the value? Thanks!

Maintenance fees are the only way to establish value for an owner. There are some travel insurance policies that will cover rented points. In that case, the rental price would be the basis for value.

I am using Travelex for my rented points. Figured the transaction would be the recovery price.

Unless you canceled at the very last minute (check in day), you would get your points back. I don't think travel insurance is going to reimburse for points that are refunded, even if it does mean that they go into holding.

You would have to pay for 3 years of insurance to cover this trip. If you cancelled, you would have 11 months to reschedule.

We just booked our next vacation using banked points and UY points. Because they are two different use years, I was told that we'd have to pay the $89 twice because they are in two different use years. This is with Travelex.

My main concern is that this a January trip and we live in Wisconsin. So mainly concerned about flights being delayed a day or two on the trip down to WDW. If I were to have to cancel say 24-48 hours in advance, would I still be able to use the banked points from the 2016 December UY? Would I have until November 30, 2018 to use them?

If I'm working it out correctly, you're using "natural" 2017 points, 2016 points banked to become 2017 points, and 2018 points borrowed to become 2017 points. Once you bank or borrow the points become that use year's points (without the ability to move them). 2017 points with December UY can be used from December 2017 through November 2018.

A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or canceled 30 days to 1 day before your scheduled Check-In date.

Sometimes a Member makes a change to a reservation 30 days to 1 day before the Check-In date using fewer Vacation Points than the original reservation. The Vacation Points’ difference goes into a Holding Account. Any change is considered a cancel and rebook.

Vacation Points in your Holding Account will be good until the end of your Use Year when they will expire. You can use them like you would your regular Vacation Points, except that reservations must be made within 60 days of your Check-In. Vacation Points in a Holding Account also cannot be banked or borrowed.

So you would simply have to make a trip with those points a more "last minute" trip. But yes you would be able to use it until the end of the 2017 UY.

Now on to the issue of weather and your trip. Think about the days before your planned traveling day. As the trip approaches pay attention to weather. Check your airline's and airport's websites often. If any travel alerts pop up that affect you, do what you can do to get out ahead of the weather. Get to the airport EARLY. Even if the alert allows you to change your flight to the first one of the day that can help if the weather tends to get worse as the day goes on.

You would have until the night of Nov. 30, 2018 to complete a trip. IOW, the last night of any reservation must be 11/30/18 or earlier in the year.

I'd be more concerned about the points going into holding. It destroys your home resort advantage and puts you at a serious disadvantage when it comes to booking anything during a busy time. Everyone else will be booking at 7 months (or earlier) while you need to wait until 2 months before arrival. Putting together anything for the fall would be difficult.
