I think that we are going to take out travel insurance for our cruise in Sept. We are a family of 5 with one registered in our friends room. I've looked at inuremytrip.com but I'm not really sure how much insurance I need. What would an emergency medical evac. cost? Some offer 50,000 in coverage, some offer 500,000. How much would I really need? We are driving and have full coverage, so I'm not concerned about flight insurance. Any one have any suggestions? I'm sure plenty of people have spent hours just looking at these quotes and policies. Tell me what you chose and why. Thanks so much!

I think we had something like $250,000 in evacuation insurance. It was all really cheap, relatively speaking - about $75 total for two of us, including insuring for airfare and seven-night cruise. I have heard the horrors of a $35,000 bill for medical evacuation, and $75 was well worth it not to have to fear taking out a second mortgage to pay for evacuation, should the worst happen. My major concerns in buying insurance were that and having trip cancellation or interruption insurance, to repay me for the nonrefundable parts of my trip if something happened that we couldn't go.

That was really inexpensive insurance, do you remember where you purchased it from? Your concerns were about the same as mine, just mostly the medical evacuation and trip replacement, interruption. Thanks for your reply!

My TA got ours from Travelex...we paid a little over $100 last time which was awesome comfort b/c we were scheduled for the 9/04 cruise and the hurricane messed it up ....if DCL did not refund us 100% then we would be in big trouble if we didn't have travel ins. We rebooked and just got back last week...we used Travelex again and paid $84 for 3 of us...no airfare insurance just cruise...it covered $50K on medical expenses which I am requesting reimbursement b/c ds(5) got an ear infection and eye infection so we will get all of our $ back plus a little more!

This is what my TA said and I researched it before I purchased it through her (which was no addl cost):

actual cost of cruise per person
and airfare (which u said u won't need)

Price usually goes up every $1,000.

Hope it helps!

Good luck and have fun

I found one online yesterday that offered the following for 4 of us for $189 total :

Trip Cancellation - up to amount of purchase
Trip interruption - 150 % of amount of purchase
emergency medical - $25,000
emergency transportation - $300,000
baggage loss - $1,000
baggage delay - $200
travel delay - $500
missed connection - $500
24 hotline - included
enhanced coverage - included

Is that pretty good? :confused3 They also had another option for about twice as much and all of the things above were covered for higher amounts.

I am guessing the $300,000 above is for the case if you had to be helicoptered anywhere for emergency purposes. My TA said that is the most important because that can get soooo expensive.

Thanks for any inout!! :goodvibes

okay - how do you go about getting insurance on a DCL cruise? My TA said it would be $100/pp for adult and I think $59 for our 4 yr old dd. That just seems way too expensive. Do you just give these other companies like Travelex your info about the cruise and they just cover it. I am confused. I thought you could only get insurance thru disney.

Get more info from your TA. Is he/she quoting you the cruise line's insurance rate? If so, you can get it cheaper elsewhere ... see if your TA can get you a quote from Travelex, Travelguard, CSA, etc.

Here's a worse case scenario (probably won't apply to DCL, but....) if you buy insurance coverage through the cruiseline and the cruiseline declares bankruptcy ... all of a sudden your insurance is worthless. That's why a lot of TA's recommend getting your insurance from a reputable 3rd party.

we got ours from travelex too. I called them and it was $129. for two adults and two children. This was just recently. Its also based on the $ of your trip.

Certainly worth every penny!!

I would never go through DCL for travel insurance b/c it is waaaaaay too expensive for us. There is one benefit of going through Disney and that is if u get their air and travel ins they will rebook a flight if something happens.

I personally don't think it's worth the $.

When I researched travel ins for our 1st family cruise I went to www.insuremytrip.com for comparisons to make sure TA was giving the best rate.

It does depend on the age of all of the travellers. We used Travelex TravelLite. I just put info for our next trip total price will be $2300 and it was $79 for all 3 of us. You can buy directly from their website or www.insuremytrip.com.

I think you might need a copy of your invoice. Whatever amount you put as the total price is what they will pay if u have to use it of course u will have to show proof. Does that make sense? It can get confusing? Ask your TA about TravelEx? DCL tries to sell their services of course which for some can be very convenient I just like to save as much $ as possible...even w/ travel from airport to port we always rent a car...cheaper and easier for us to make stops if we want to.
