travel insurance for non package holiday

thinking of booking flights from dublin and 2 weeks staying in disney
is there insurance i can take that if anything happened to my flight i would get my money back for flight and accomadation or vice versa.
I have only ever traveled on a package hol and am very nervous about splitting the hol up, but would if i knew i had good insurance. Has anyone else did this?

Hello Sam! This will be the first year that I do Orlando DIY instead of a package with Virgin but I frequently do DIY when I go to Europe.

We had a flight to Paris from Manchester, separate accommodation, DLP tickets and Eiffel Tower tickets, plus the Louve booked when the ash cloud hit and my travel insurance paid for it all, minus the excess! If in doubt, call and speak to a few providers, check the excesses etc.

The amount we have saved over the years I have no worries doing DIY, this next trip alone is approx a £5,000 saving over VH prices.

We got stuck for 10 days in the ash cloud - our insurance company told us repeatedly they'd pay some (not much, but it would have covered a few nights) and then changed their mind once everyone was back home...

Most insurance companies will be jus fine for DIY - your main concern should always be good medical cover - think £10 million....

Almost any of them. We've used in the past Endsleigh, the Post Office, Columbus Direct, the AA etc. - many of them are underwritten by the same people. We went with Columbus Direct again this year. I've heard bad things about AXA insurance so we try to avoid them if possible. We won't go without at least £10 million in medi al cover; that's the most important thing for us.

Why are you so worried about the flights? If your flight is delayed, just ring your hotel and ensure they hold the booking for you. They should be perfectly happy to do so.

All insurance companies get good and bad reviews, its all down to your claim not what has gone on in the past with other claims, you can't know how good any of them are until you try claim yourself.
M&S are very reputeable who I was with after Insure & Go but when I came to renew they doubled the premium, too expensive for me now.
I am now with Columbus until my renewal in a few month, as with all others they get mixed reviews. I will see what is available when I come to renew.
Main reason I want insurance is for the medical cover, not too bothered about other stuff, never claimed in over 100 trips abroad.

John Lewis have an Independent Traveler Cover section which also covers volcanic ash cloud. I've just booked using the AA, partly because they get a good rating from Which who assess over 20 elements of Travel Insurance. It might be worth you reading through Which.com.

I found marks and spencer travel insurance very comprehensive and suitable fr independent travel. I had to make a small claim last year for medical costs and they processed it quickly and efficiently.
