travel insurance for children on school trips necessary???

My DD14 will be going to DC with her class in the spring. Has anyone ever considered buying travel insurance for a school trip? They do offer it through the tour company, but the price is high ($110) compared to quotes I checked out online. The trip price is high enough, I need to save anywhere I can!

What does that cover? And, do you need to have it? Does your regular insurance cover any health issues, even out-of-network?

DD needed insurance for a study abroad trip she will be taking in January. It is required for the trip. Her insurance was about $ 40 for the whole month of January. It mostly covers health insurance, not trip cancellation issues.

I probably would not get the insurance, but I am sort of cheap that way. And if it was required, I would use a reputable company, not the tour operator.

From what I remember the insurance through the tour company is not just like regular travel insurance.

It was also a way to ensure you could get your money back if your child did not go on the trip for any reason...for example they backed out due to nerves. You would get all your money back except for the initial deposit and of course the cost of your insurance.
