What is the quickest way for four people and luggage to get from John Wayne airport to the Grand Californian hotel?

By Cab.
Regardless of how many people or how much luggage you have, a cab ride to the resort area is by far the fastest and costs about $44.

Yes, we have fit 5 people and luggage on more than one occasion in those mini-van taxis. If you have 6+ people and luggage I would look into Super shuttle-non stop is $65-70.

Cab. We just did this last week. We only had three people, but all of the taxis in the taxi line were the minivan type that seat at least 5 people. $50 with tip.

I agree with taking a cab. You can ask for a flat rate which should be around $45. Cabs are better than shuttles because they are direct. No extra stops to collect/drop off other guests, no having to preplan, just walk out of the airport and grab one.

For the return to John Wayne from the GCH , check with the front desk first. They used to give a voucher good for $10 off the return trip.

To piggyback on this thread... how long is the drive typically between John Wayne and DLR? We'll have a rental car, but I'm hoping to hit a character breakfast the morning before we leave. We have a 1:30 flight. If I leave DLR by 11:00, am I good?

More than good. It is about 20-30 minutes driving. And John Wayne is a very small, super fast airport. I've never waited more than 5 minutes for check in or security.

Taking a taxi is so easy from SNA to GCH. If there isn't the right size for your group just ask. Same for the return, there are taxis waiting right out front of the GCH. Tell the one of the Bell Service people what you need and they'll wave one over for you. We've never had to wait. The flat rate is a nice option.

For Rental Cars.....
As you leave the airport note where the gas stations are. Most rental car places require you to fill up with in 6 miles of the airport and show them the receipt.
I heard on the LA news gas is more expensive around the airports.

In the Portland, OR area regular unleaded is about $3.04/gallon.
What is the price in Orange County?

We take the Disneyland Resort Express, with the AAA rate it's $30 roundtrip per adult and children free. So if you don't want to lug car seats and have children it's only $60 Roundtrip for all 4!

Of course gas stations are more expensive around the airport, that's just logic and it's accepted everywhere. But I have NEVER EVER had a car rental place REQUIRE me to fill up within 6 miles, nor show a receipt. When we rent a car at SNA, we fill up on the way back at Costco in Irvine and have never had a problem.

BTW: You can check gas prices here: http://www.gasbuddy.com/

It really depends on what day it is. If it's during the week and traffic is bad it can easily take well over an hour to get to the airport. Leaving at 11:00 with only about two hours before boarding may be cutting it too close. We were almost late for our flight last year under similar circumstances.
If your traveling on a weekend then you should be good.

Last two times, once at SNA and the other LGB airports both asked to see the fill receipt. Looking at the gauge wasn't enough for the check in staff..
I haven't rented a car for almost 2 years, maybe things have changed.

I've never had to show a receipt for National or Alamo but if I recall correctly their terms do say something about refueling within a certain distance. They've never given me a problem if the gauge read Full.

Note that Hertz has made some changes recently. If you've driven less than 75 miles, they will require a receipt or they will charge you a flat fee of $13.99 regardless of the fuel gauge reading:

I rented a car once and didn't like it. I much much much prefer to just take a cab, or shuttle if it's just me. I always take a cab back to the airport. As mentioned above, you can ask at the front desk or the customer service desk for a taxi voucher, which gives you a flat rate of $35 back to the airport. The advantage to that over the Disneyland Resort Express is that you don't have to wait. Grab a cab from the airport, and when you're ready to return, go outside the GCH and get a cab to go back. No need to make arrangements ahead of time, no wait, no walking out to the bus stop etc. However, there are a couple of reasons to go with DRE. One, I don't think you need child seats in the bus which is a plus for some people. And two, you can save $15 or so.

Be careful with getting a cab through your hotel. I started to do that one time and found they just mark the fair up $10 and then get a kick-back from the cab co.
Cab fair from the resort area should cost in the mid $40 range.

We used the Disneyland Express- hopped right on and we were off! The Grand Californian is their first stop so you won't have to go to all of the other hotel stops. For the return to the airport, the Grand is the second to last stop (Disneyland Hotel is the last) so you'll only have one stop at the DLH before heading to the airport. Quick and cheap!

This does not happen at DLR hotels. In fact, they will give you a flat rate voucher that saves you $10 or so ($35 flat rate to SNA). Not saying this doesn't happen elsewhere but I've never seen or heard of it at DLR hotels.
