and it's not motion sickness (he's a truck driver, that would be almost ironic, don't you think, a truck driver with motion sickness...) It's complete anxiety. It doesn't matter if it involves flying, driving, or rowing a boat for crying out loud, it's the thought of travelling that does him in. He can't pin it down to one reason, but I believe it's just the general "This is different and I don't like change" attitude he and my daughter have. I'm sick and tired of our trips revolving around him being sick and miserable. So, it's been suggested that he get a prescription for xanax for this from his doctor. My question is, shouldn't he get this and be on it for a bit before our trip? Or, are there other things we can try to alleviate this anxiety? Once we get there he'll be fine, but I'm not driving 2000 miles with him miserable and sick.
thanks!

I don't know about medications, but when we flew to Hawaii in Oct. I panicked during the landing and hyperventilated for the first time in my life (hopefully the last). My sister who is a nurse was with us on the trip, and she told me of some yoga breathing to try on the flight home. (I thought I'd be stranded on Maui forever for fear of flying home. That might not have been so bad actually :sunny: .) It was something like breathe in through your nose for x amount of counts, hold it for for x amount, exhale for x amount. I think the #s were 7's and/or 8's. It really made me relax and feel like I was in control of my own body and wasn't going to get sick. Maybe there's someone here who does yoga that knows more details.

I have one word ........ATIVAN :thumbsup2

I HATE to fly. our last few trips to disney we drove (from NJ!) we'd get there in about 15 hours-- straight through. but it is so exhausting--- and time consuming. my poor husband would do it just for me.

i hate the airport so much- i dont even like to pick people up from there! :rotfl2:

finally i said- thats it-- give me the drugs. they just relax me enough that my heart is not beating out of my chest- and my stomach is not churning! I take one when i get up the morning we are flying- then another at the airport.

Have your husband go to his DR. i am sure they will prescribe something for him!

Good luck!

I have a friend that doesn't get motion sick while driving, but does get motion sick when they are a passenger of any kind(plane, car, boat). He usually takes motion sickness pills and that does help. I think anyone can get motion sickness, for some it may just be the amount of the motion. For some it may just be they don't like the feeling of not being in control. Good luck with your problem.

I second the vote for Ativan!! My Dad and myself both take a pill the morning of travel. It takes away that big knot in your stomach. It wasn't something we needed to take beforehand. It works really well for us.

thank you all for your help. The Ativan will keep him from vomiting and feeling nervous in general? Darn, where were you people on our wedding day? Our two best men had to literally drag him out of bed a 1/2 hour before the ceremony. Blagh. thanks!!
