I was wondering if there is any transportation from Old Key West, to the outlet stores, or is it necessary to rent a car? How long does it take to get there?

You would have to rent a car or call a cab. There might be a convoluter way to do it via LYNX and the I-Drive Trolley, but I wouldn't even begin trying to figure it out.
The time it takes depends a lot on traffic. Best case about half an hour. Worst case, a LOT longer.
I agree that you have three choices, rent a car, order a cab, or ride the Lynx from the TTC. My DD's and I took the #50 Lynx bus to Belz Outlet Mall on our trip. It took about 45 min from the time they picked us up till we arrived at the Mall. There is one transfer, but really easy to make. The drivers are VERY friendly and helpful. The cost is $1.10 per person each direction.
I plan on going this route again on my next trip to Orlando. It was the first time that I ever braved going outside WDW. I'm sure glad that I did. It gave us the opportunity to see other parts of town, shop for discounted souvenirs and it was an enjoyable trip. I was never uncomfortable or afraid during this trip, we even went to the Titanic Exhibit by way of the Lynx on a different day. If you do take the Lynx, one tip. The Lynx signs will have the bus route #s on both sides of the sign. If it doesn't have the # that you think it should, Make sure that you check the opposite side of the sign. That happened to us once and I thought we were at the wrong place
Good luck and have fun.
