Transportation question

Hey all,
We are all booked up for April with all of the points we can use. I had a thought that maybe we would try to come a day earlier than our DVC stay and get a room somewhere near downtown Disney. Now I know we can not get ME to take us to that hotel but since we will be finishing our trip at Kidani can we take it to the airport? Also any suggestions on rooms near the downtown Disney area? We would love to have a day to settle in and hit downtown and ease into our trip.

would go with a value resort so you can use ME - otherwise you are paying for the taxi or shuttle to get from the airport to the hotel besides WDW will transfer your stuff for you to DVC resort

In case you do not know, on move day:
Call Bell Services and have them come pick-up your luggage and refrigerated items. Be sure to inform them that you have items to keep cold.
Tell them where you are transferring too.
Check-in to your new resort.
Go do whatever you want that day.
After getting your room text and you are back in it (items are not at your new resort until 2 - 4 PM), call Bell Services to have the items delivered to your room.
NOTE: You must be in the room for the pick-up and delivery, tips expected.

I was only answering if the OP took the PP advise about staying at a value or moderate room before moving over to DVC.

Spiceycat had an excellent suggestion. Before we added on and had extra points, we would spend the first night at Pop Century or one of the other value resorts. When calling for a room, I would ask about AAA discounts (they used to have them, don't know if that is still the case) and/or annual passholder discounts and DVC member discounts. Getting free transportation on DME and then luggage transfer is a big money saver. You can have them transfer your luggage but then head to a park from the value resort, since check-in time for Kidani isn't until later in the day.

You could also take the bus from the value to downtown. since your trip in 11 months away, hopefully most of the major renovation work being done there will be near completion.

Good point on the DTD construction
I know right now I would not want to drive from a DTD area hotel to DTD as you can be stuck in stop and go traffic for 30+ minutes to drive that mile to DTD.

If the OP had a car for the 1st part of the stay, I would consider staying near Sherberth Road and 192 (Irlo Bronson) you can almost be as close to Disney parks as Kidani when you drive in on Sherberth.

I definitely would look at the numbers. Renting an off site room vs a Disney Value. You would get Magic Express and you luggage transfer on moving day,not have to deal with driving from the airport then to you Disney resort and start your trip a day earlier!
