Biggest scam in Vegas is the taxi ride from the airport to the strip. Do not let them take the highway, it will increase the price of your fare from < $20 to $40.
Tell them no highway, local streets only. I usually stay farther north at Wynn, so I'm not 100% sure about New York, but I would probably tell them to take Paradise to Tropicana.

Basically, there are 2 ways out of the airport. The Swenson exit is on the north part of the airport (which is usually where you need to go if you are staying on the strip). The tunnel takes you to the south of the airport, so you have to loop around to get to the strip.
Theoretically, if you just say you want the shortest route or the most direct route, they can't take you on the highway.
