Transport to Kennedy Space from Parks

I posted this on the Universal boards, but so far no one could really help me, so I'll take a chance here!

I want to go to Kennedy Space Center one day during our July 2003 trip to Universal, staying at Royal Pacific. Has anyone ever done this, either from Disney or Universal, and how did you get there and back?
I looked on the Mears site and there was no mention of KSC. Also, is it possible to rent a car just for a day and is it expensive? (I have never rented a car before!)

mears does go to KSC but only on mon,wed and fri for $19 rt

We rented a car from National (they are located at the TTC). I think it was about $50 with discounts.
