Hi folks,

This Friday is the 11th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). For those unfamiliar, it all began in Boston after the murder of Rita Hester on Nov. 28th, 1998. A community of her friends, family, and transgender activists came together to hold a candlelight vigil in her honor. The next year, in light of the continued violence against transgender people, the first Day of Remembrance vigil was held in San Francisco. It is now held every Nov. 20th, and is being observed in vigils all around the country, and the world. Folks near WDW can attend the vigil in Orlando, which will include a candlelight vigil at Lake Eola. I am an organizer for Boston's TDOR, and we will be retracing the steps of that original march 11 years ago. We will stop at Union Square (nearby to where Rita was murdered) and will read aloud all the names of those who have been murdered this year.

This year, we know of 120 transgender victims, but there can only be countless more. If you are able, please attend a vigil near you. A list of locations is provided at transgenderdor.org, which also provides details on those who were murdered. Every year, the list gets longer and longer. We will not forget.

Thank you for posting this information and for doing the work you do.

No one should die because of who they are. :(

I have a very hard time with these sorts of events. I can't even look at the poster displays for educational purposes at pride events, it's simply too overwhelming; the brutality of it.

May there be no more names added to the list... :(

I am so overwhelmed that there were that many killed this year.

Evil is a terrible force.

Hate is so foreign to me, I just can't wrap my head around it ... and yet it's always there.

I found two events near me but I can't make either one. Thanks for posting this information and I hope someone else can make it.

My daughter used to help organize the event at PSU. I attended two years in a row...and it was very powerful....so heartbreaking but also very beautiful to see the transgendered community and their allies coming together.

How is your son, Rosie? Doing well, I hope? (I know he is not from your body, but that so doesn't matter with all the love and support you have given him).

Hoping all is going well...

Thank you so much for asking! He's doing quite well. He was an usher at Zena's wedding and he looked so handsome.
He has relocated and has a nice bunch of roomates. Next week he's having a housewarming party and I think I'm the only "adult" invited! :lmao:

I'm so proud of him...it hasn't been an easy road but he's doing great.

dale--thank you for the information and for the work you do:worship:

rosie--I am happy to hear your "son" is doing well now:)

Thinking of my transgendered friends today. Your courage humbles me.
