Hi folks,
This Friday is the 11th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). For those unfamiliar, it all began in Boston after the murder of Rita Hester on Nov. 28th, 1998. A community of her friends, family, and transgender activists came together to hold a candlelight vigil in her honor. The next year, in light of the continued violence against transgender people, the first Day of Remembrance vigil was held in San Francisco. It is now held every Nov. 20th, and is being observed in vigils all around the country, and the world. Folks near WDW can attend the vigil in Orlando, which will include a candlelight vigil at Lake Eola. I am an organizer for Boston's TDOR, and we will be retracing the steps of that original march 11 years ago. We will stop at Union Square (nearby to where Rita was murdered) and will read aloud all the names of those who have been murdered this year.
This year, we know of 120 transgender victims, but there can only be countless more. If you are able, please attend a vigil near you. A list of locations is provided at transgenderdor.org, which also provides details on those who were murdered. Every year, the list gets longer and longer. We will not forget.
