Can somebody kindly tell me how one would go about taking VHS tapes and inputting them into a computer so they can be edited and burned to DVD? I want to convert old family home videos that are currently on VHS into digital, but I don't know where to begin. I have a powerful computer with media center, and I know it has the ability to do this, but I just don't know how. I also have programs like Adobe Premiere, so once I get the video in the computer, I know what to do from there. Can anybody help me out????

What you need to do is get an "A"to "D" converter ( analog to digital ). Pinnacle makes one, but so do lots of companies. Or have a camcorder with A to D passthru.

In any case, your computer need the footage to be digital.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I have one of those...and it was in fact made by pinnacle. What do I do once I hook it up? Do I need a specific kind of software?

should come with it if needed.

After the footage is in the compter, LOTS of programs will burn a DVD:

Nero ( I won this but rarely use it )

Roxio Media Creator ( use this )

Windows XP has DVD burning, I believe. So, so, many to choose from!

Plus www.download.com has free programs to DL that do the burning.

PD, thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. I know how to use DVD burning software and I have Nero, Sonic Record Now and Roxio Creator. I just wasn't sure which gadget to use to go from the TV to the computer and what software I needed. I'm sure something came with the pinnacle thingie, I just hope I still have it! Otherwise I'll have to see if I can download it. Anyway, you were very helpful to me! Thanks a lot! :)

I need some clips of old home movies editted & eventually burned onto a DVD also, before the tapes degrade. Can't I simply get a DVD recorder & hook it up to my current VHS/DVD PLAYER and record/burn a DVD from that?

Can I start & stop a DVD recorder, or can I only record straight through without stopping? I'd like to edit AS I record - if possible. :)

I have an older Sharp 8 mm camcorder and am not sure what kind of hook up it has and if it is possible to hook it up to my Media computer. I have read that I need a Fire Wire port but would you believe my new Dell does NOT have one? Any advice is welcome.

I also have a Panasonic DVD/VHS recorder that I love. It has one button dub for transferring VHS to DVD and works very well. I am thinking I can make my DVD's on there and then edit on the computer.
