Transferring Question

First post on Disboards, has to do with transferring points. Member since 2011, and we are constantly borrowing from the upcoming use year. Planning a trip for June 2018, and will be 62 points short (with borrowing) (38 points if we opt for one time points from DVC). Question is if I look to rent points through transfer, should I look for 2017 or 2018 points? Also, should I look for the same use year (March) or does that not matter.

What will be the use year you are transferring into? You can't borrow transferred points, but you can bank them. The UY you transfer into must still be active or in the future. If you can find March 2017 points, you can still bank them to use them for a June 2018 vacation (which would fall into your Mar 2018 UY).

I was just about to ask a similar transfer question, so figured I'd add it here rather than start a new subj. I apologize for the daisy chain, DisfanTam.

We are planning a trip in May 2018, we own 150 points and are going to hypothetically transfer another 150 points from another member. As this will be my first foray into DVC transfers, the question is does it matter where the home resort is? We are Boulder Ridge, and looking to make a reservation at our home resort...but I just wanted to make sure that the home resort only made a difference when the 11 month booking window is in question. Meaning we could rent someone's SSR points (for instance) and repurpose them to be used at Boulder Ridge in the 7 month timeframe. I am also aware that the UY must be a future date based on May 2018 (essentially June 2017 points or after).

Am I missing anything?

Transferred points retain their home resort and use year. Unless those match a contract in your account, you won't be able to see or use the points online; you'll have to call.

All points are equal at 7 months, so home resort wouldn't matter. But you do need to ensure that the use year is valid for your trip. Remember, transferred points can be banked, but cannot be borrowed.

What happens at the next use year if you bank transferred points?

For example, lets say I get 100 points transferred to my account. I don't want to use them this use year so I bank them. When my next use year comes, I get my annual allotment, plus the banked points come availble. Do they inherit the year and resort of my membership or retain the details from the original owner?

What I am ultimately getting at, if I get 200 per year and my home resort is BLT.... and during the last use year I transferred 100 points from another person's contract/ different use year and resort.... do I now have 300 BLT points or 200 BLT and 100 other resort?

As supersnoop indicated, banking the transferred points does not change their identity. If you received a transfer of 100 OKW points and banked them, they are still OKW points. You could use them to book OKW 11 months from check-in but if you wanted to use them to book BLT, they could not be used until you are 7 months or less from check-in.

Keep in mind that you will have to call MS to use transferred points to book a stay. They will NOT show up in your online account UNLESS the transferred points match your home resort and use year. (If the home resort and use year match, the transferred points will show in your online account and you will be able to use them to book).

I only mention this because if you will be trying to get something that is hard to get, the hour advantage online booking provides can make the difference between a reservation and a waitlist. Good luck!
