Transferring question

I'm thinking of asking for a transfer of points. After looking on the rent/transfer board I see many posts going like this:

Person asks for a transfer and a couple of posts say they have the points needed for the transfer but the person is still in need of the points after those posts.

What went wrong? Trying to figure out if this is worth it. Was thinking getting a transfer would be better than asking someone to rent points to me.

Wrong price, wrong resort or wrong number of points are all factors which could end a potential deal.
If a person responds that they have 150 OKW points to transfer but the person has to have BW for a x-mas reservation it isn't going to work. The same applies if I respond and don't have the amount needed or ask for $20 a point.

Just trying to get this right.....if you are booking at the 7 month window it doesn't matter where the points come from, right? What about use year? Does that matter when booking at 7 months? :confused3

Another possibility was one like I recently ran into. The points were going to expire 3/08 (2007 UY) and we agreed on a price BUT found out that the points were actually left over from 2006 UY but had been banked. You can't transfer points that have been banked.

You are correct that at the 7 month window it no longer matters which points are being used (home resort).
As far as use year, it does matter.
Example: in Feb. '08 you ask for points to make a BCV Aug 08 reservation, now since you are inside of 7 months home resort doesn't matter, but use year will...having '07 OKW points transfered into your account wouldn't work because they will expire before you plan to use them. Now if those same points are current use year they can be banked, by you, once you recieve them and then used to make that BCV '08 reservation. Hope that wasn't too confusing :)

This is a perfect example of how you can have several responses and not a deal. The nuances of DVC can be difficult to negotiate at times especially for those who aren't particularily well versed. (MS included):)

So you can't transfer banked points? I was under the asumption that if you transfered points that they took on the use year of the contract they were transfered into. Do they hold the original expiration? If I transfer points that will expire on January 31st, into someones account that has a May UY, do they still have to use them before January 31st?

you can't transfer banked points, but you can bank transfered points,
They do retain original use year and resort

Thanks childsplay. Not confusing at all. Now, I have a september use year. Do I have to find only someone who also has a september use year to get points from? Or doesn't that matter at either 11 or 7 months? Sorry if these are stupid questions. I've never considered a transfer before.

Nope. The only caveats are:
1. Home resort applies if you want to make a reservation prior to 7 months
and
2. If after 7 months, then really the only thing you have to watch is that the points are current, meaning "useable", (which might include banking) for the period you are making the reservation.
Hope this helps.:)

Sure does. Thanks a bunch. :flower3:
