Transferring Points

A friend recently mentioned that she needed to purchase some additional one time use points through Disney as she will be short 25 points for an upcoming trip and I said why not rent them from me?
She was concerned that she would have to make separate reservations if we did this. But this seems strange to me.
If I transfer points to her, do they not become her points in that she can add them to her current points and just make one reservation?
Any help in clarifying would be greatly appreciated!

If the points don't match her home resort and use year, she'll have to call in to make the reservation because the points won't show up online.

If you just made the reservation then it would be separate. If you transfer then the points are hers to use as needed and she could use them along with her points at 7 months for any reservation. As mentioned unless they were the same resort and UY she won't be able to see them online and will need to call in - but that's no different than buying the one time use points from DVC. Also those points are capped at 24, not 25.

So the transferred points can be combined with her current available points to make one reservation, so long as she calls in?

Yes. Also, understand that transfers are only allowed once per use year so you both have used up that option for whichever use year you do. Transferred points can't be borrowed (thought they can be banked) so also be careful that you transfer the correct use year for the reservation that your friend needs.

I called MS today and they advised that the points I transfer her retain my use year. Her use year is in December and mine is March and her trip will be in February, so they said all will be good.

I have to admit, it is quite confusing.

Be careful with your transfer. If your points are March 2017 and her points are Dec 2017, she should be fine using them in February 2018. But if you are transferring March 2018 points, they would have to go into her Dec 2018 UY and she couldn't use them unit Feb 2019. You cannot borrow transferred points and the UY must match.

See how confusing it is?? Thank you for clarifying, all of this help is greatly appreciated. The points will be coming from my March 2017 use year. I don't think I would ever borrow points to transfer. Only if had some left that I would have been banking anyways.

You wouldn't have borrowed points to transfer since borrowed points can't be transferred. It is all a bit confusing but the important parts are that as with all points they have to be eligible to be used for the dates of the stay. Then there's the following rules with transfers:

Only points that have not been banked or borrowed can be transferred.
Once transferred the points can be banked by the receiver but they cannot be borrowed.

The thing is that you can transfer points in the next UY, but you do it without borrowing. So you could have actually transferred your 2018 points too if she had needed them for a stay that started sometime after March 1, 2018.
