If I am interested in acquiring points from someone via a transfer, how does that transaction take place?

- The giving member has to call member services to initiate the transfer
- They must know all of their member information (obviously)
- They must know all of your member information (member # and possibly confirmatory information like address)

- The points must not be banked or borrowed, but they can be banked AFTER the transfer
- Points retain their original use year and home resort
- Points will NOT show up online if you look in, only in the DVC system, make sure to get and keep your transfer confirmation number

- Best bet is to do a conference call with you, the giving member and member services

I just did this last week. Another member transferred (thank you!!!!) 165 points to me. We have an August use year. I transferred in October 2012 HHV points and immediately banked them on the same call (banking period ends May 31 for October use year, didn't want to miss it).

It was slick and easy - just hard that the points don't show up for you to see. But they did disappear from her account.

I prefer this over renting if you don't need to worry about the "1 transfer per use year" rule. It allows you control over the points and reservation.

I'm about to do this with someone so we can go this August with our inlaws. I just can't borrow anymore:scared: When it came to compensation (even though technically you aren't allowed to Sell points), how did you go about it. Did you do a paypal transaction just before the call to MS? or before? Just don't want to send money and then the other line go dead you know.

Lucky man- no member except someone who knows you in real life would transfer the points before you paid for them. Use Paypal so you are protected and you will be fine. I bought transfer points earlier this week. The payment went to the member, he called member services and did the transfer, he emailed me the confirmation number, then I called MS and banked the points. It was super easy and the transaction took less than an hour total. And yes, he needed my name and address of record off the DVC member site and my member number. I emailed these to him before he called to do the transaction. I did not need to be on his call-as soon as there is a transaction confirmation number any MS agent can see the points in your account.

Well, maybe not usually, but I did. There is a DISer who needed quite a few points ASAP for a Xmas booking. I took a chance and just called MS and did the transfer on the spot with no upfront money so she could get the room she needed. Although I didn't know her, her posts seemed to be okay. It all worked out fine although it took a little longer to get the check because she lives in Canada. This was a few years ago when DH was having major health issues and we couldn't really use our points.
Fast forward to now. I am short points because we keep treating our family. So I had points transferred into my account. The owner did expect 100% upfront and I was fine with that because, once again, I could tell from his DIS posts that he was legit. It took a while because he is also from Canada, which slows the check-clearing process, but all went just fine.
Bottomline, the terms and conditions for a transfer are entirely up to the 2 parties involved to negotiate.

Paypal won't offer any protection for timeshares. Only tangible goods.

When doing a transfer with someone you don't personally know, are you using a contract or just a lot of trust? I'm considering a transfer also.

There is a lot of trust involved, but life is full of gambles. I prefer money order, faster clearing from the Canadian perspective.

I did my first transfer ever a couple of months ago. The buyer and spoke on the phone a few times and we could tell from the conversations and from each others' posts we felt comfortable with each other.

The buyer suggested just sending a check since there was no rush. Got the check with their membership info, waited a little over a week until we were both confident it had cleared, then I called MS and did the transfer.

It was an easy transaction.

The "one transfer" per use year rule just means either you accept transfers in for that year or transfer out for that year, correct? I can actually receive transfers in from multiple accounts as long as they're all coming in and none going out, correct?

Only one transfer in or out, not multiple.

That is interesting. Do you know when that change occurred? I know in the past, multiple transfers in have been allowed as long as there were no transfers out. This isn't something I have really even thought on in quite a while, however.

I can't speak to a change date. Perhaps someone will post with that. It has been one in or one out for quite a few years, however.

That was the original policy back in 1991 and was changed to allow multiple transfers per year several years later - and then changed back to the original 1 transfer per membership per Use Year in or out policy we still have today. I think the current policy changed about 6 years ago but don't really recall the date.

Hello
I'm just wanting to understand this correctly.....

I have an August use year. Does that mean that i can have points transferred in before August of this year and then again Post August 1 of this year?

Yes, you would need 2012 points transferred into your Aug 2012 UY and you could bank them. And you could get 2013 points transferred into your Aug 2013 UY. But you could not borrow them.

That is great info. Thank you.

My contract is June use year, so in about a week I'll be on June use year 2013.

If someone transfers in points to me and I want to use those transferred points for a trip in July of this year, when my contract is in 2013 use year, does it matter what use year the points they send me are? (i.e. their points could still be 2012 use year or could also be 2013).

Very interesting. Thank you!

It's my understanding you need points from the same year. So if you are getting them in your June2013 UY, you need 2013 points. But I'm not sure about which month. If you get Dec 2013 points, can you use them for a July 2013 reservation? That might be considered borrowing and you can't borrow transferred points.
