Transferring Points

So in reading our materials, the 2011/12 vacation guide says that transferring points for $$ is not allowed. So if it's not allowed and you're caught doing it, what happens?

It's never been allowed (as far as I know, at least it's written in my original papers), but I have never heard of a penalty after the fact. If you tell MS that that's what you're doing, however, they won't let you.

While I am sure that DVC has a generally idea that people are being compensated for transfers, it is not allowed per the rules.

If they become aware prior to the transfer, they will not let you do it. If it is after the fact, then they could take some action, but what, I don't know as I have never read of someone actually getting caught after the transfer has taken place.

Speculation on my part, but I think DVC's response may have been the institution of one transfer in/out per UY. That at least limits what owners can do, especially those with lots of points.

And, of course, now you can one time buy points at the 7 month mark to complete reservations (up to 24) so in essence, they are transferring you points for money themselves.

I think the rules are set up that way to protect DVC in case a dispute arises between the parties over a transfer of points. Say for instance if member A transfers points to member B and then Member B refuses to pay then DVC is under no obligation to return the points. They stay clear of the dispute.

And in fact the points can not be returned since only 1 transfer per UY is allowed, right? What about renting. It would seem that renting is allowed, just not commercially, right? They say sot more than 20 times per year.

When DVC started in 1991, the transfer policy was one transfer per Use Year - either in or out. A number of years later, that policy was changed to allow transfers without limitation (except either in or out) and then changed back to the original policy in (I think) 2006.

Thanks Doc! I didn't realize that it started that way.
