Transferring Points Question

Hypothetical Question: If there are two DVC members, one with a June UY and one with a December UY, who want to swap points for home resort advantage, how does a transfer work? I know you can do only one transfer a year, but I can't wrap my head around how this works with two different UYs.

For an actual swap they would need to be from different years. So one could transfer 2020 points and the other could transfer 2021 but they couldn't both transfer 2021.

Ok, so the December UY person could transfer points from their 2022 UY into the June UY's account (which would retain the December UY and the original home resort), and then the June UY person could transfer points from their 2023 UY into the December UY's account (again retaining the June UY and the original home resort). Ok, so the December UY person could transfer points from their 2022 UY into the June UY's account (which would retain the December UY and the original home resort), and then the June UY person could transfer points from their 2023 UY into the December UY's account (again retaining the June UY and the original home resort). They wouldn't be able to be transferred just yet because that would be too far out (Dec UY being in their 2020 UY still I believe would only be able to transfer 2021 at this point and June will be able to transfer 2022 in a couple of days). But the theory is correct once the timing works.

Wow! Somehow I got a year ahead. I meant December 2021 transferred to June UY account and then June 2022 transferred to December UY account. But once we get into the new UY, then you can transfer points for the next UY, correct? (That's why you said I could transfer 2022 in a few days?)

Sounds right to me.....I've only ever transferred in and haven't tried a swap so I don't know if I'm missing something there (I'm sure others will correct if I'm mistaken).

You also have to make sure that the recipient of the transferred points can use them for the vacation they plan to book using the transferred points.. The recipient can bank transferred points, but not borrow them.

You can't borrow transferred points. They retain their resort and UY, so you need to make sure you aren't transferring Dec points to use for a Nov vacation. unless it is the Nov 11 months from the start of those Dec points.

Transferred points must have matching years (not UY). So 2022 points into a 2022 membership.

What I'm wanting is to use transferred in points for a February 2022 trip from December 2021 UY. Then my June 2022 points transferred out would be used for a fall 2022 trip. Would this work?

Yes it will work. The Dec 2021 points count as your 2021 transfer for your June 2021 UY.

The June 2022 points would be the transfer for your 2022 UY, but will be valid for a fall 2022 UY trip since it’s in the June 2022 UY

I did that last year. Transferred June 2020 UY points to my Dec UY. It counted as 2020 transfer for both but booked them for a trip in October 2020 as they maintained their own UY.

Yes. The UY of the points going in determine the UY it counts as so if you are getting 2021, it’s the 2021 transfer for both. If you are giving 2022, then it’s 2022 for both since that is the UY of the points.

Since they retain their own UY for use, you just need to make sure they are valid for your trip without needing to borrow them back as you can’t do that.

Basically, once you have them, forget about your own UY when figuring out the trips they can be used in.

Right but where I’m getting confused is that we each have different UYs. But I think I’m understanding that a transfer from a December 2021 UY would go into a June 2021 UY and then a transfer from a June 2022 UY would go into a December 2022 UY. I think that’s what Bill and Deb meant about not thinking of UY but actual year.

They don't really go into anything. They create a separate temporary account in your profile with the transferred points and their UY. Right now I have 3 UY's if you look at my account because I transferred in points from two different UY's than my own. You basically just ignore the month when determining the one transfer per year. So if you transfer in 2021 points that's your 2021 transfer.
