Transferring Points Between Yourself

I have just purchased a new contract of points with a different use year. The resort is the same. I am one point short in one UY to book a nights stay. I was wondering if I could transfer those few points (14) into my new UY, then book the nights reservation using those points and one from the new UY ( totaling15 points) , then link that night to my current reservation?

I have heard MS does not consider transferring to yourself a once a year transfer . Anyone done this type of transaction?

Yes, you can transfer points between your own memberships. While there is nothing in writing about not "counting" this as a transfer, MS has been allowing such transfers even if you have already transferred points to anther member.

If the points are from the same resort, you can transfer and use all of the points at 11 months at your Home Resort.

Enjoy! :)

So if you have banked points, current points and some borrowed points transferred from one contract to another (all at the same time) ,... Are they then lumped into one (current) UY, or will the UY from which they originate still be in effect?

The reason I ask is if I decide to sell off a contract , I may want to strip the points out if it first (Realizing it will devalue the contract some )

I agree that MS has been good about transferring points between contracts if they are owned by the same person(s).

But be prepared for MDE issues if you use a mix of "regular" and transferred points to make your reservation. (That wouldn't stop me from doing it, though).

Good luck!

You cannot transfer banked or borrowed points. Only current year points. If you transfer future year points to a future UY, you cannot borrow those points. You can bank transferred points.

Points always retain their home resort and UY. So if you have a Dec UY and a Sept UY and transfer the Dec into Sept, those points will still be Dec UY points.

I have to UY. Every time I transfer points from one to the other, I am told by MS that I have used my one transfer per UY.

Ha! Never a possible issue, is there? :goodvibes

It would be for one night at the end of our current reservation. Hopefully, if (or should I say when) there is an issue, it will be to just correct that one night.
Thanks for the replies!

Happy Thanksgiving! (where's the turkey icon?)

I did just make a five night reservation, most of the points from my Sept contract (borrowed and would expire in August), two from my Dec contract and a few one time points. I have one reservation, but it's a long way off, so nothing with MDE other than it showing up there (and I do have one dining reservation so far).

So did you transfer your September points into your December, or December into your September UY? Did you have to be real specific with MS as to which points to use? Can you transfer borrowed points between your contracts?

The Sept points I used had been borrowed, so they could not be transferred (banked or borrowed cannot be transferred). The Dec were going to expire if I didn't use them and it was so much easier to just transfer them to use with a spring reservation.

When I called MS to make the reservation I was on the phone with them for about 25 minutes. I had to transfer the Dec points first. Then tell them I needed one time use points to complete the reservation. The CM made the reservation, transferred me to whoever had to complete the purchase of the OTU points, and then was transferred back to the first CM to complete the reservation and get the transaction number.

It does not really matter which Use Year you transfer since the points will retain their original UY (and thus the same expiration date and banking window). Personally, I would transfer into the contract used to make the original reservation but it doesn't really matter.

Yes, you should be specific regarding the points used. Borrowed points cannot be transferred - but the only way to borrow points is to make a reservation using those points and later cancel the reservation. However, you can transfer points from the current and next Use Year - so you can "sort-of" transfer "borrowed" points in that fashion without actually borrowing any points. Once transferred, points may be banked into the next Use Year, but cannot be borrowed from the next Use Year.

As an FYI, I also have two use years and had transferred points from one membership to the other. Well, a few months later, I wanted to transfer points into one of my accounts from another member. The first MS rep I talked to told me I couldn't do it because I'd already done one transfer and was only allowed one per year. I very politely questioned whether the transfer between my own accounts counted against the "one per year" transfer policy. She checked with a manager who confirmed that yes, it counted. Well, I called the next day and got a different MS rep, and this one also confirmed with a manager that I *could* make the transfer. So my advice is to be ready to face this potential hurdle, and to be persistent but very polite.

at this point, it varies based on the cast member you talk to but don't be surprised if they eventually settle on an official rule that prohibits it no matter how polite you are.

I absolutely agree with you, and I posted this because there may be a shifting in the policy IMO. Since I just sold my other UY, and when I buy again I will buy a matching UY, it no longer applies to me, but I thought I would share just in case it benefits someone else.

Just a FYI I was able to transfer points between my own two contracts. And this was after an external transfer to another member. So for the time being it seems DVC is not including transfers between yourself in the once in a UY rule.

Sorry, I missed this first time around. The transfer to yourself does use your one time option but they will generally proceed on a case by case basis for multiple contracts of a single owner after that. They will also transfers banked/borrowed points at times. Newer CM are less aware of this option and situation it seems. Generally though it's best to avoid transferring when possible and simply reserve separately and link them though I realize there are situations when that's not ideal but then having to call to reserve using the transferred points isn't either. Had you done your internal transfer first, you would not have been able to do the external transfer is my understanding.

I just transferred pts from one of my contracts to another.. I needed 9 pts to complete my ressie at Aulani in July

Hi, I just called MS to ask them about the policy regarding transferring to myself, and I was told that the support team verified that transfers amongst my own UYs (two) will not count toward the one transfer in/out per UY per account. He assured me that I would be able to transfer points to a friend and still transfer my own points to my other account. He said that the support team has an online FAQ that says this and that any CM would be able to pull up the same information.

Just checking if anyone else has verified this, and if it is still a case of getting the "right" CM to do the transfers.

I think it's still hit or miss depending on the knowledge of the CM. Also, my info suggests that it does count in a sense in that if you did a transfer between two separate master accounts you owned, it's unlikely you're be allowed another outside those accounts.
