Transferring 3 years of points

I'm currently in ROFR on a resale contract with Dec 2016 points that have already been banked into 2017. I plan to rent/transfer out all the 2016, 2017, and 2018 points... in a perfect world, I would borrow the 2018 points into 2017 and have one lump sum of 3 years worth of points to transfer in one transaction.

Is this possible, as i've heard that points retain their original UY... if not, is it even possible to transfer out 2016 points that have been banked? I know renting is an option, but the appeal of a quick transaction is ideal. Thanks!

Hi

You can not transfer banked points. You would have to rent the 2016 points. So remember not to bank 2017 points if you wish to transfer.

You can transfer the 2017 and 2018 points in Two transactions.

It’s correct that the transferred points retain they UY.

All sounds good... do I have to wait until any particular point in time to transfer 2017 and/or 2018 points?

No the sooner the better. I would recommend to transfer the points before the banking deadline then the new owner have the option to do so that will also give you a better price.

Absolutely... that's the plan (if it clears ROFR), rent/transfer as soon as I have the points. Just trying to get a handle on the rules/restrictions so I'm ready to roll... thanks!

Another important point about transfers is that you get ONE transfer per Use Year (into or out of your account, not both). If you want to transfer all of your 2017 points, you will have to find a member who will take them all. That will use up your one transfer for your 2017 UY. Same holds for your 2018 points -- you will need to find someone who will take the whole lot, you cannot transfer them to multiple members. That will use up your one transfer for your 2018 UY.

Yup... it's 120 pts/yr so I think it should be pretty easy to swing that. Cheers!

Do not make assumptions about how easy something like a transfer will be. As noted, you are entitled to do only one transfer per use year and it can only be that use year's points, not banked or borrowed points. With a transfer, the recipient also is limited to one transfer, either in or out. A very common issue with transfers, besides finding someone to do it with, is that the recipient often needs more or fewer points than the transferor wants to transfer. If the recipient wants more, he will not purchase your 120 because that would block him out of getting the rest of the points he needs via transfer. If the recipient wants fewer points, he may be unwilling to take your entire 120. In other words, it might be easy for you to find someone who wants a transfer of points but very difficult to find someone who wants exactly 120 points.

Though it is more work, it is probably better to have a back-up plan for you using the points by renting to another via your making the reservation in the other's name with your points. There is only a 20 times per year limit to that kind of rental (before you will be considered in violation of the clause that prevents you from renting points for "commercial purposes"), and thus you can do more than one rental if needed to assure using all or most of the points you want to be rid of, and you can use banked, current or borrowed points. Moreover, there are DVC reservation brokers, such as David's, dvcrequest.com, that are in the business of matching renter's with owners to do a rental and you could use one of those to minimize any hassle.

Understood... we have 200+ points aside from this contract that we use regularly, and since I’d be renting the banked 2016 points anyway, we have plenty of ways to use or get value from a handful of leftover points after the 2017 and 2018 transfers.

It would likely be easier to put the points up with a broker (like David's) or list them on the rent board here, since you have so many. I just got rid of 315 points (a 2BR 7 day rental) with David's in a day, and I couldn't be happier with the process. I suspect that your 360 points would likely be scooped up equally quickly.
