transfer question

If I had points transferred in to my account from someone on the boards looking to rent their points, could I switch a current reservation I have from my own points, to using the newly transferred in points? as long as it was within the 7month window if they were from another resort? Might be a good way to grab a few extra points cheaper that maybe someone has expiring by a certain date. I have nothing in mind, or know of anyone dumping points. Just a hypothetical for future knowledge.

Only if your current reservation was NOT made with your home resort booking advantage otherwise you are circumventing the home resort priority.

^ ^ ^ That is correct, if your original reservation was made during the 11 month window, then it can not be switched, it would need to be cancelled and rebooked. If the original reservation was made during the 7 month window, then they should be able to swap.

Good to know. Thanks. We are staying 4 - 5 nights this year on two separate occasions that we didn't originally plan on. So we will either be short for summer 2014 and rent some or we will borrow into 2015. My thought was maybe getting some points off the boards and swapping my December reservations with those points but now I know I can't do that. I was only looking to keep the ability to book online with my own points for 2014 when the time came rather than call MS to use transferred points.

So the rule is to prevent circumventing the booking advantage, but what if the transferred points were the same resort? Is that then allowed?

If the transferred points are the same resort as those that booked during the 11 month window, then MS may be able to swap them. I don't know if the system will let them, but if they are the same home resort, then no harm in calling to ask prior to setting up the transfer.
