Hey guys,

I need your opinions on transfer paper. My trip is getting closer and closer, and I need to start thinking about t-shirts again.

What paper is everyone using and IS HAPPY WITH? I used a mix last year--Avery from Hobby Lobby and another no-name brand off Ebay.

I'm not sure which transfers were on which t-shirts by the end of my marathon t-shirt making stint last year, but I was not happy w/what I had....the t-shirt bled thru on several of the iron-ons, and I ended up throwing away the t-shirts this week because after washing them one time, they were cracked and peeled.

Perfectly good shirts--worn one time and then trashed. I really don't want to go through that again. I'd like to be able to save the shirts from year to year if possible.

I know Amy has a brand that she swears by and sells on her website, but it seems a little bit pricey (sorry Amy) for my budget this year--5 sheets for $15, and I MAY need about 20 with room for mistakes on top of that.

Couple that with the cost of shirts ($2 at Michaels this week), and I may end up with a hefty t-shirt bill!

So...all that said...any brand or vendor you guys lean toward?

I have used the Avery before too and they never lasted through any washings also. We decided to make tshirts for the the first time this year for our trip. I bought gold seal brand through ebay that ran under $1 per each. However, the directions on them said to use a steam press and that they were for professional use. We used our iron and after trial and error figured out how to use them after ruining a couple of shirts in the process. You really had to hold the iron on it a long time to get it too come off the transfer paper. After looking at all the great designs here I decided I wanted to make a few more shirts and ordered amy's transfer. It was a difference of night and day between using them. They were so much easier. They went on in like 30 seconds compared to the other brand. We have not washed either of the brands yet so I can't speak for durability but as of last night when we tried amy's I would pay more and go with the easier to use ones. I ordered amy's on Monday this week and they were at my house by Wednesday afternoon.

Okay, I will keep that in mind; maybe I'll just have to cut down on the number of t-shirts I make this year....

Good to know someone here has bought Amy's! :thumbsup2

Has anyone else had experience w/Amy's transfers or another brand from one of the craft stores?

I've used Amy's for a number of shirts and wanted to test them before our trip shirts. I actually have one on now and it has been washed NUMEROUS times and there's no bleeding whatsoever! I made the choice after seeing the bad reviews of other transfers that it was worth it to have the shirts last.

You get what you pay for and you really are throwing away the shirt & transfer if you buy the cheap ones that bleed after one wash! Amy's transfers work great, I wouldn't even consider getting a different brand now.

By bleeding, what do you mean?

Do you mean the cracking and peeling that happens? Just curious.

Thanks for the 2nd vote for Amy's transfer paper!

Yes, I have heard that some cheaper transfers that you can get at the stores will bleed the colors as soon as they get wet? The color just runs and washes off? It has never happened to me personally b/c I use Amy's. Amy's don't crack either, they really last a long time and I've gotten lots of compliments on the shirts I've made, and how well they wear.

I also vote for Amy's! I have bought the "off name" ones from Walmart before. They were ok, but they were more expensive than Amy's. But then again, I order 20 at a time! If yo buy your shirts from Jiffyshirts.com, then you can make some thirts for a good price (I prefer 100% cotton and some of Michael's are ploy/cotton blend)

Thanks Cajunfan. I had a really hard time with Jiffy Shirts last year. TWICE I ordered white t-shirts, just basic white shirts, and they were paper thin, and these were name brand shirts.

No way could I wear them to Disney World! One wet ride, and well, you KNOW what would happen! The girls would be out for all of the "World" to see! LOL.... :lmao:

So, I ended up getting mine at Hobby Lobby last year half price. This week, Michaels has theirs 50% off, so I'll probably run over there to see what they look like...

See, I am like you...I'd really like to order at least 20 transfers, but that's like $40 from Amy (if I'm remembering correctly), and then you put $40 into t-shirts at Michael's--I'm up to almost $100 already!

...but I guess that's only $4/t-shirt, right? :)

Can you tell me what brand and style you buy at Jiffy shirts? I'm so afraid to try again...

Our Hobby Lobby here has there tshirts 50% off this week also. Michaels here are only $2 a shirt too.

Michael's has their t-shirts for 5/$10 (they rung up $2 each though so I'm sure you don't have to buy in groups of 5!) They're Jerzee brand and seem (to me) to be better quality than the ones from Hobby Lobby. I've bought the ones from HL before and they seem thinner.

Does anyone know if I use the Amy transer pages can you print from an ink jet printer. Or do I have to use a laser jet?

Thanks

I would definitely use Amy's. Well worth the price. You can wear the shirts over and over again. I have a Bolt one and Spongebob that has been washed over 10 times now, and still are not cracked. I have used the Avery, Wilton, and a couple other ones. They have all cracked, no matter how well I followed the directions, and the boys won't wear the shirts anymore. I have a stack of around 20 shirts that nobody wears, so I turn them inside out and use them as dust rags. What you pay extra in the transfers you save from having do shirts over again. I have used the shirts from Michael and they work well. I have gotten my youngest shirts from Target (Cherokee) b/c the Michael's one are still too big. I will only use Amy's transfers now. The colors still look vibrant as well.
