There is a site on the web that had a couch to 5 k running plan. It isn't even running its jogging.

The plan has you being able to jog a 5k in 9 weeks. I was thinking of doing the plan. But I think I want to lose some weight first. It would make my knees happier if I did.

Kim - the couch to 5k is a good plan, and remember, there's nothing wrong with walking. No one says you have to run. Walking a 5k is just as admirable, and much easier on your knees. Running puts about 3-4x your body weight of stress on your joints, while walking only puts about 1.5x your body weight of stress on your joints. Go easy and take it nice and slow with a training plan.

I agree, the C25K is a great plan for beginners. I've used it twice to get back out there. Just remember to start off slow and your body will thank you!

This is perfect! Thank You!:thumbsup2

If you ever want to bump it up to a 10K (walk or run), you can use the Crescent City Classic training guide. They publish it every year. The race in run in the Spring every year. The also have a 5k in the fall.

at the top of the article, is a downloadable calender showing what to do every day.

awesome thanks for this info...Ive been going to the gym not so regularly but one of my goals this year is to run a 5k! Def going to try this out!

Thanks so much for posting this. I would love to run but have never been able how to get to that point!

I just wanted to say that I also had a long break from running. It started when my 1st daughter was born in 1998 and I also got a new job in 1999. I did not run (or exercise) at all until for the next 7-8 years. My weight increased, and I was over 200 pounds. I had tried to run on and off in that time, but I kept injuring myself. It finally was a big realization to me to say "I don't need to run like I did when I was in high school and college. There's nothing wrong with walking." Jan 2006 I finally said, I'm tired of how out of shape I've become, and I started moving. I started walking 2 miles a day, and gradually built up to running with walk breaks. Now I primarily run, but I still take walk breaks on really long races like a half marathon or marathon. I'm out there having fun for me, and I don't care about the pace at all.

Everyone has to do what feels right for them and their body.

I'm much too heavy to start running, and my knees are suffering, but walking...I can do walking. I'm not starting from a completely sedentary lifestyle, but I do need more discipline in my exercising regimen. Treadmill for now, walking outdoors once the roads clear.

I have to run almost daily due to my job. The knee pain is out of control. I'll be happy when I can slow the pace down a bit. I would love to join in on some of these races, they sound great!
